Course format and materials used

 “Go Fish!”card game designed using road signs  “Cheat Sheet” study companion  “Trouble” game for final review  Virginia Driver’s Manual

 Create your own card game with 2 decks of UNO cards  Cut the exact road signs (2 each) and the sign name from the driver’s manual  Match the color of the sign to the corresponding color on the UNO card  Place on face side of the card and cover with clear contact paper

 Play the game just like you did when you were a kid  Everyone remembers, “Give me all of your fives!” This time just ask another player for their “Right curve-side road”  If they have it, you made a match and if they don’t have it….Go Fish!

 The goal is to reinforce the association of the sign color, shape and terminology  Since the signs and names are cut from the actual Virginia Driver’s Manual, it will be the exact sign on the test  Usually, just one round of the game is enough for the students to retain the information  It’s fun and the students love it

 2 sessions covering the manual is a good way to drive home the signs and general knowledge sections of the test  Be aware there are terms used in the book which are substituted with different wording on the test  For wordy definitions, try to provide 3 key words that the student can pick out of the possible test answers

 A “Trouble” game board is a perfect and fun way to review general knowledge questions  Use the 50 questions from the “Cheat Sheet” printed out on standard mailing labels. Stick the question on the face of a regular playing card  Print the corresponding number of the question to the other side of the card  By having the number on the backside of the card, you (or the student) can read aloud for the entire group to hear  If player answers the question correctly, the game piece on the board game can be moved around the spaces  First player to get his game piece “Home” wins

 Each student will hear 50 questions read aloud (just like it will occur at the DMV with a reading accommodation)  Players will hear the correct answer and have a chance to ask questions throughout the game  The game really engages the students and brings out a little competition (they love to send the instructor back to the start!!!)

 Furnish an application for the test taker to fill out prior to test date. This cuts down anxiety that can build up while completing the form and awaiting the test

 Our Norton office has an exceptional local DMV for our clients to visit  Immediately after completing the study group, DARS arranges the reading accommodation in a private room for our test takers  This strategy has optimized our client’s chances of successfully passing the test  It is an important factor for successful results

 Have a question? Please call or email:  Lisa Salyer  lisa.salyer@dars.virginia.gov lisa.salyer@dars.virginia.gov  276.679.2262 Office  276.365.3081 Direct line
