2 I.Gore v. Bush A.The election of 2000 was historically close. B.Vice President Al Gore was the Democratic candidate. C.The Republican candidate was George W. Bush, son of George H.W. Bush former President. D.Each candidate battled for undecided independent voters. E.Both candidates promised to cut taxes, and made health care and education central issues.

3 II.Ralph Nader A.Member of Green party. B.Challenged the two candidates by adding a third party option for those looking for change.

4 III.Election Day 2000 A.On Election Day voters were split almost evenly. B.The election came down to the state of Florida C.The results in Florida were so close that the state law required a recount of the ballots using vote-counting machines. D.The machines threw out thousands of ballots because they could not determine a vote for president. E.Gore then asked for a hand recount.

5 IV.The Recount Continues A.When it became clear that not all of the recounts would be finished on time Gore went to the courts to overturn the deadline. B.The Florida Supreme Court set a new deadline for completion of the recounts. C.The United States Supreme Court overturned the Florida Supreme Court decision to extend the deadline. D.George W. Bush was officially named President.

6 V.Bush Becomes President A.During the 2000 election campaign, The U.S. economy began to slow. B.The stock market dropped and many Internet-based technology companies went out of business. C.President Bush’s first priority in office was to cut taxes to boost the economy. D.Congress passed a large tax cut.

7 VI.Bush’s Education and Defense policy A. Congress passed education bills requiring states to conduct annual reading and math tests for all public school children in grades 3-8. B.Bush called for a new military program designed to meet the needs of the post-Cold War world. C.He strongly favored strategic defense or the effort to develop missiles and other devices that can shoot down nuclear missiles before they hit the U.S.
