TOPIC: Elements Compounds & Mixtures Name Date Period Class What is an atom? 1.The smallest unit of an element 2.Cannot be broken into a simpler substance. What is an element? 1.A pure substance 2.All atoms look the same for each diff. element. 3.Can be made up of an atom or molecule

What is a molecule? 1.Two or more atoms bonded 2.Same atoms bonded = Elements 3.Different atoms bonded = Compounds

What is a compound? 1.Two or more different atoms chemically bonded 2.A pure substance. 3.If atoms are broken apart, no longer that compound. 4.Proportions matter! 5.Compounds have different characteristics than the elements that make them up. H 2 0 H 2 O 2 CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6

What is a mixture? 1.A combination of two or more substances blended together 2.All substances retain their own identity. 3.Can be a blend of atoms or compounds from different substances 4.Can be easily taken apart. Heterogeneous Homogeneous = Solution Pg 77

1.Go to the class web page for Monday. 2.Select “ Quia Quiz” 3.As a group, let’s see who can BECOME a MILLIONAIRE first! 4.Use Your Notes to help you!
