3. Mandela is the first in his family to attend school. Mandela opens a law firm with his long time friend Oliver Tambo. Mandela uses non-violent methods of protest until 1960, when 69 peaceful protesters were massacred. He raised funds and coordinated sabotage campaigns against military and symbolic apartheid targets.

5. Mandela is arrested in 1962, and a few years later was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. He spends 27 years in prison. He is released from prison in 1990. In 1993 Mandela and de Klerk win a nobel peace prize. Mandela becomes the first black president of South America.

8. Mandela continues to fight against the injustices of this world including the AIDS epidemic, which took the life of his son, as well as global poverty. In 2007, Mandela, along with other renowned and independent world leaders formed the group called the Elders.
