What Events Led to Mandela’s Great Success What we have learned from Nelson Mandela

Even as a leader, Nelson Mandela chose to learn from his mistakes rather than repeat them. Mandela led with patience, humility and a willingness to sacrifice in an unrelenting goal to unify a divided nation and reconcile decades of racism. “I was not a messiah, but an ordinary man who had become a leader because of extraordinary circumstances.” – Nelson Mandela

Mandela is the first in his family to attend school. Mandela opens a law firm with his long time friend Oliver Tambo. Mandela uses non-violent methods of protest until 1960, when 69 peaceful protesters were massacred. He raised funds and coordinated sabotage campaigns against military and symbolic apartheid targets.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” –Nelson Mandela

Mandela is arrested in 1962, and a few years later was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. He spends 27 years in prison. He is released from prison in 1990. In 1993 Mandela and de Klerk win a nobel peace prize. Mandela becomes the first black president of South America.

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” – Mandela

“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb…But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.” – Mandela

Mandela continues to fight against the injustices of this world including the AIDS epidemic, which took the life of his son, as well as global poverty. In 2007, Mandela, along with other renowned and independent world leaders formed the group called the Elders.
