1. Naming Compounds.. 1.Find the parent chain (the longest section of carbons). If the chain is a ring place “cyclo” before the name of the carbon chain. 2.Number them. Number 1 should be designated to the end carbon closest to a double or triple bond. The next rule for number one is to be closest to a significant side chain or functional group (hydroxyl group, or methyl group) 3.Side groups should be placed in alphabetical order and prefixes attached (eg di, tri, )

2. 4. Side groups should be numbered to indicate which carbon they are attached to. 5. Dashes (-) should be placed between the numbers and names 6. Number/s should be placed before the suffix to indicate which carbon the double, triple bond or other main functional group is on. (eg. 2- bomobut-1-ene)
