1 Unit 5: PP vs. Present Tense PP vs. Past Tense  Duration: how much time?  Medical symptoms  Telling about family members  Career Advancement

2 Present Perfect Tense: Review  Present perfect tense always uses the words have/has  PP also uses a unique verb form: the past participle  The time expressions for and since are often used in the PP Tense For:used when describing a period of time. Since: used when describing a definite, specific point in time.

3 How long?  We’re already given the Past Participles!  We’re already given the Past Participles!  We are also given the time expressions.  We must decided between ‘for’ and ‘since.’

4 Medical Symptoms: For/Since in the PP Tense 1. First, let’s read the story about Dr. Fernando  Then, let’s choose the correct time expression.  Finally, let’s choose the best medical term

5 Present Perfect vs. Present: Since I was…  The questions are in Present tense.  We could answer in the Present tense (ie. “Yes, I know how to ski”) but using the PP tense adds more information.  In using the PP tense, we’re adding a time expression.

6 Present Perfect vs. Past: Have you always…  The questions are in the PP tense.  We’re already given the Past Participles.  We must answer in the PP tense, then add more information using the Past tense.  We must also decide between for or since.
