Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Christian Grimm, Matthew Scott GA08 PRAGUE European Open Science Cloud Update – For Information 16 June 2016 GÉANT Ref. GA(16)025

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Scope (excerpt) (…) launch of a pilot action that should demonstrate how availability of scientific data and data-analysis services for European researchers can be ensured through a cloud infrastructure Proposals should address the federation, networking and coordination of existing research infrastructures and scientific clouds (…) Particular attention should be paid to (…) from Horizon 2020 projects as well as to the needs of the ‘long tail of science’, including orphaned scientific communities (…) build on existing infrastructures and design a stakeholder driven governance framework, with the involvement of the research user community, the research infrastructures and the research funding bodies to ensure its sustainability Expected impact (excerpt) Provide a governance and business model that sets the rules for the use of data, deals with issues related to privacy, sensitivity, copyright and security and oversees the provision of services (business and governance layer). 2 First Call is for an EOSC for Research Pilot Action: INFRADEV-04-2016

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Proposal prep started just 8 weeks ago after Call clarification meeting on 15 April ( ~9 weeks before submission deadline) Deadline is 22 June so a lot of activity this week! Proposal is taking better shape but still: It is a very complex environment RIs and e-infras needing to work together and understand each other in a very compressed timeline (e-infras working well together though) Difficulties with representation of the full constituency of RIs and research communities new areas of Governance and Policies work are relatively small activities compared to Science demos, Services and interoperability Selection of Science Demos Lacking clear coordination and interaction between the WPs Some overlaps remain Timelines between WP unclear Other missing parts to be completed (overall budget, final manpower allocations, KPIs, wrap around text etc) 3 Current situation of proposal

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Board and GPPC and GA member NRENs receive regular updates Detailed engagement and follow up with GPPC and subject matter experts in key areas ( eg in Trust and Identity, Network, cloud services provisioning, procurement etc) Discussions with NRENs expressing interest in participating Approach taken is to engage in areas of interest ensuring that Proposal uses existing resources and services available from H2020 projects and e-infrastructures specifically the GÉANT project and/NREN community Some more specific references in case of AAI (ref to AARC project), network services and cloud service portfolio have been inserted Some Specialist Skills, knowledge and expertise from GÉANT and a few NRENs will be deployed in relevant areas Governance Financial / Business Modelling Procurement Service architecture Service Portfolio Support for pilots and demonstrators 4 GÉANT Approach

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Overall budget €10M over 2 year duration starting ~ Q1 2017 ~40-50FTEs ~25 Beneficiary Partners ( excluding multiple 3rd parties) STFC ( Coordinator), CSC, MPG, EMBL, SURF, EGI, CNRS, INFN, DESY, KIT, DCC, LIBER, TRUST-IT, Athena, PRACE, CNR, INGV, JISC, BSC, UGOE, KNAW-DANS, ICOS-ERIC, GEANT. GÉANT will bring in subject matter experts (sme) from ~ 6 NRENs as 3 rd parties Effort expected ~ 2FTEs (per year) Some fragmentation necessary to bring in specific subject matter experts in key areas Expected effort per year: Governance and business modelling:6-8 MM Services:14MM Interoperability2 MM Policies ( procurement)2 MM JISC and SURF also engaging separately and actively as individual Partners 5 Overall status of proposal preparation

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Following update VC held 3 June with NRENs Background to EOSC and Infradev-04 Call Details of overall project structure Areas of specific interest for GÉANT and NRENs Suggested changes still being made to proposal text Draft proposal circulated to NRENs on 10 June Detailed continuing engagement and follow up with GPPC and subject matter experts in key areas (eg in T&I, Network, cloud services provisioning, procurement etc) Discussions held with NRENs expressing interest in participating Final manpower budgets being confirmed this week 6 Progress update since 10 June e-mail sent to NRENs ( GA members)

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org WP2: GOVERNANCE Design a stakeholder driven EOSC governance model with the involvement of the research communities, research institutions, research infrastructures, e-infrastructures and research funding bodies. WP3: SERVICES Definition of an architecture and portfolio of EOSC services and the related rules of engagement for service providers Service Pilots supporting Science Demos WP4: INTEROPERABILITY defining an architecture for interoperation built upon existing (computing and storage) facilities operated within the stakeholders (RI) sites (ie has more data and computing focus) WP5: SCIENCE DEMOS Building on the expertise of the research infrastructures and their service providers, 15 demos will be selected from a range of science areas to stimulate engagement of science communitie and stakeholders in Open Science 7 Work Packages 2-5: Objectives

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org WP6: SKILLS Connect with established national and international projects, initiatives, training schools and institutions (e.g. RDA, EDISON, CERN School of Computing, GridKa School) and develop EOSC education and training strategy, for both face-to-face and online audiences and establish a sustainable technical EOSC training infrastructure WP7: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT To gather input from different communities using already existing (cross) community organisations and broaden awareness about the Open Science Cloud under potential Scientific user communities and other Open Science stakeholders WP8: POLICY Develop a policy framework towards an efficient, open and trusted EOSC to foster research and science and that promotes making all research artifacts (data, publications, methods, models, software, etc.) open by default. Document compliant procurement best practices for acquiring and selling cloud resources 8 Work Packages 6-8 Objectives
