Made in China – The Rise of Modern China Lesson Three Unit Four Teacher’s Edition

Today’s Main Idea: In recent years China has become a leader in the world economy. This would not have been possible if China had not embraced liberal reforms. As time progressed China began to export goods around the world.

Remember from last class…  Last class we discussed four major reforms that Deng put into place to modernize the Chinese economy: 1. Modernize agriculture 2. Expanding industry 3. Developing science and technology 4. Upgrading defense

Education:  Emphasized literacy  Chinese leaders believed this was necessary for modern jobs  Used education to mold people’s thought – make them believe in the communist vision  Taught students the importance of practical science and technology  Ex: New agricultural technology – like new plows

Science & Technology:  China has been a leader of technological innovations  China has almost 400 million internet users  There are only 300 million people in the USA  China focused on practical technology and science  Focused on science and technology that would create jobs  Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are currently banned in China  All of these companies want to do business in China because of the large number of internet users

China’s Relationship with the West:  A healthy relationship with the west was necessary for economic growth  During the Cold War China and the US were often at odds with each other  In the 1970’s China began to reach out to the west  They knew this was necessary for economic growth  In 1971 China was recognized by the UN  In 1979 Nixon visited China

China’s Acceptance into the World Economy:  China’s relationship with the west has been damaged by its human rights record  For example: opponents to the government are often jailed without trial  Hosted the 2008 Olympics  It joined the World Trade Organization  Means it had become a major world economic leader  Last year the US imported over 41 billion dollars in goods from China  The US only exported 184 million dollars in goods to China  This creates a large trade deficit

China’s Growing Middle Class:  Since the 1980’s China has had a growing middle class  This middle class is the driving force behind China’s economic growth  China wants to establish a strong socialist market
