2. discern (v): to distinguish one thing from another When looking at this picture, it is difficult to discern which student is least happy about having to perform in their class presentation of “Romeo and Juliet.”

3. expedite (v): to speed up the process Having the young child run around stage, bumping into walls and furniture, did not expedite the rehearsal process. Rather, it impeded it.

4. taciturn (adj): quiet, uncommunicative Taciturn is not a word that would be used to describe these young men.

5. expedient (adj): advantageous, convenient Krissy found the most expedient way to slay Katie was directly underneath the peacemaking Nicole’s arm.

6. fastidious (adj): finicky, overly critical The fastidious students of first period regularly have the highest grades in their class.

7. The parsimony of the students was legendary—they regularly made millions trading on the stock market during English class, but refused to spend or share a penny of it. parsimony (adj): stinginess

8. provincial (adj): narrow-minded, unsophisticated The provincial country boys made a foray into the big city, and ended up feeling terribly out of place.

9. respite (n): a break, a rest Slaying friends with a plastic sword provides a nice respite from the traditional work of English class.

10. Abscond (v): sneak away and hide Just moments after this picture was taken, the two young criminals tried to abscond with their beloved costumes. (The boy on the left was particularly fond of his fancy red shoes.)
