3 Setting Setting is the time and place of a story. The setting helps create the mood, which is the way the author makes you feel while reading.

5 Characters Characters can be a person, an animal, or a thing with human-like qualities. There are different types of characters including protagonist/antagonist and static/dynamic.

7 Plot Plot is the sequence of events in a story. In other words, it is the order in which things happen in a story. It’s the storyline. Plot Structure is a diagram that shows the order of most stories.

10 Conflict Conflict is a struggle or an obstacle that keeps the character from getting to his goal. Internal Conflict is the struggle against one’s self. It is inside the character’s mind. External Conflict is the struggle against an outside force, such as another person, nature, or society.

12 Theme Theme is the overall message of a story. Sometimes it is called the lesson. Themes are universal. They should cross space and time, be true about the human condition, and be something that you can learn about life in general.
