Topic / Objective: 1) To analyze the performance task for the unit and begin planning and brainstorming ideas for a fictional narrative. Essential Question: 1) How can analyzing narrative techniques in a model text help me plan my own fictional narrative?

Announcements 1)The Performance Task for this unit will require you to write a fictional narrative. 2)Hard copies will be available tomorrow, but for now, we’ll explore the task in the “Collections” textbook, page 153.

Read page 153. Two modifications: A) You will be given a choice of story themes or ideas, but they must show “how a character or characters connect with others.” B) Final draft will be about 650 words (two pages of a text) minimum.

STORY OPTIONS Choose ONE OF THE options below: A) Story that takes place over or during a holiday season like Christmas. B) A story that is set during a lunch period. C) A story of your choice (but with my approval).

Model Narratives In order to write a fictional narrative, it helps us to have good models for various techniques. We have read an excellent model – the long, short story, “When Mr. Pirzada...” We will also read a poem and the story “The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket” by Y. Kawabata.

Your Turn 1)Today, we are going to start planning our narratives by focusing on techniques we want to show. 2)Looking at the bottom of page 153, we see that these guiding questions help us to focus on certain techniques.

Narrative Techniques Model Text: “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” by Jhumpa Lihiri. Q: What point of view does the author use to tell the story? Identify the narrator as first person or third person. A: Lahiri uses the first person narrator (“I” pronoun), and the story is told through the perspective of a ten-year-old girl, Lillia.

Planning by analyzing techniques... Choose three more questions to answer from page 153: A: One will be answered on scrap paper and submitted at the end of the period. B: The other two questions are help to guide your planning—choose two that will help you focus on what to write about.

Baruch and Beyond I taught at Baruch until 2014. During that time, I also taught at City Tech and NYiT. KEY TAKEAWAY – I’VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN A COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT.

One Insight (Among Many) College is hard to get into (relatively). College is hard to get kicked out of (once you’re in – you would have to TRY to get kicked out).

Terms Major – the core classes you will take in a field or career path. This defines your degree.* Minor – a related or unrelated set of classes in a field of your interest. Most students change their majors during the college careers. You can enroll as an “undecided” and still choose a major later, typically in your 2 nd or 3 rd year.

Q&A Go around the room. EVERYONE TAKE A TURN. If you have a question, ask it. Students answer first (if the answer is incorrect or needs clarification, I’ll step in). Otherwise, I will answer questions.
