5 The Book of all Books Repeated actions Items + places People + roles Experience Stories Rules + Guidelines Beliefs + Meanings As Ninian Smart said religions have common features. One particular similarity is that they all have holy books, sacred texts and scriptures; the writings that teach what the religion is about. Holy books include all of the Ninian’s Dimensions as they outline the rituals believers should follow. They highlight the important objects, clothing or places people should honour. They speak about the key people, about the community of believers and the various roles people can fulfil. Believers tell of experiencing God when reading, meditating or reciting the holy words, or the writings include accounts of people experiencing God. They are full of stories, historical or allegorical. They are packed with rules and guidelines on how to live. And, of course, give instruction for what people are to believe and on how to make sense of life.

6 You are going to create your own holy book expounding and explaining the 7 dimensions of your own religion! You will have some time in almost every lesson to continue to add to your holy book/religion. But at the end of the unit we will spend two lessons devoted only to your holy books to complete them, and for them to then be peer-assessed. So you can use the time given in one of two ways, either: to create as you go (making parts of the final book in every lesson) or take notes and plan as you go and then create in the final two lessons. Use your time wisely! Your Book of all Books Getting your thinking going… Today you need to come up with a brainstorm of IDEAS about what your religion could be about, believe, include or involve. Think about beliefs, actions, stories, clothing, rules. Remember… these do not need to be final thoughts! These are “could be’s” not “will be’s”
