6 Foundation The Prince of Asturias Foundation was founded in the city of Oviedo on 24th September 1980 at a formal ceremony presided over by His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, heir to the throne of Spain, who was accompanied by his parents, their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain. The essential aims of the Foundation are to consolidate links between the Principality and the Prince of Asturias, and to contribute to encouraging and promoting scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage.

8 2009 PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARDS LAUREATES The award will be bestowed upon the person, institution, group of people or group of institutions whose work in Architecture, Cinematography, Dance, Sculpture, Music, Painting or other forms of artistic expression constitutes a significant contribution to Mankind's cultural heritage.

10 World Health Organization INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION The WHO is considered one of the most respected international institutions for its efforts towards the coordination and cooperation between countries in health matters. Since its establishment, it has contributed towards the eradication of pandemic diseases such as smallpox, the reduction of cases of poliomyelitis by more than 99%, the prevention and control of infectious diseases; the reduction of child mortality rate; and the detection and management of epidemic outbreaks worldwide.

11 David Attenborough SOCIAL SCIENCES Considered one of the most outstanding science broadcasters in the world and a pioneer in wildlife documentary filmmaking, naturalist David Attenborough has contributed enormously to our knowledge of nature and its conservation.

12 Martin Cooper and Raymond Samuel Tomlinson TECHNICAL & SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH Their research has contributed significantly to the great technological advances in human communications and has been fundamental in the development of the mobile phone and email, respectively. Two lines of research that have revolutionized the way thousands of millions of people all over the world communicate.

13 FRANCE Yelena Isinbayeva SPORTS Considered the best pole-vaulter of all times, Yelena Isinbayeva has achieved historic records and has become the only female pole-vaulter ever to clear the 5.00 metre barrier, setting a total of 27 world records in this sport.

14 The National Autonomous University of Mexico COMMUNICATION & HUMANITIES Its close to 300.000 students and over 34,000 professors and researchers make the UNAM the largest university in Ibero- America. Over the course of its almost one-hundred-year history, it has become a point of reference, combining quality and an extensive academic and research offering with its firm commitment to disseminate culture, humanism and new technologies.

15 Ismaíl Kadaré Narrator, essayist and poet, Kadaré represents the pinnacle of Albanian literature and who, without forgetting his roots, has crossed frontiers to rise up as a universal voice against totalitarianism. Regarded as one of the greatest European writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, his works have been translated into over forty languages

16 CONCORD The City of Berlin, on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall The Berlin Wall, symbol Europe's reunification, was for decades the worldwide representation of the Cold War. The peaceful revolution, which on 9th November 1989 lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequently to the reunification of Germany, has captivated millions of people worldwide, contributing significantly towards the reestablishment of the balance between the East and the West.
