2Build a Profile

What is 2Build a Profile? We use it as a tool to make observations of your child’s learning in school. Using our tablets we take a photo, make notes of the child’s learning and suggest next steps. We then attach learning objectives related to the learning observed. (See example of an observation) Usually we do most of the above things at the end of the school day because we want to spend as much time as possible interacting with the children and moving their learning forward. Mrs Lynch, Mrs Camicia and I all make observations of the children throughout the day.

How do observations take place? Planned observations We plan observations for specific children or for specific areas of learning where necessary. For example, we may have not observed any role-play for a particular group of children in the class so we may set this up and observe their play. Or we may want to observe how a particular child interacts and shares with others. Each day the teacher and teaching assistant has focus tasks where an adult works with a group on a particular activity. 2build a profile will usually be used to keep a record of the children’s learning. Spontaneous observations This can happen when we notice a child showing new learning in their play or chosen activity. When a child brings something they have done to show us, we may keep a record of that too.

How do we assess the areas of learning? Reading and writing are areas not usually recorded on 2build a profile. Writing is usually done on paper and their work is annotated and filed for evidence of their learning. When we read individually with a child, we record their progress in their reading record. When we do guided reading with a group, (this occurs once a week), their learning is noted on a sheet and filed. Other areas of learning (Personal, Social and Emotional development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design) are recorded on 2Build a profile as planned focus tasks or as observations.

How often will you receive an observation? Each week every child in the class will receive an emailed report of 1 or 2 observations. This is usually sent at the beginning of the week. You have been sent 3 sets of observations so far this term. Each child has on average of 8 observations each week but many of these will be group or paired observations so are unsuitable to send to parents. If your child has been absent, you may not receive any observations during that week. During the last week of term, when there are lots of extra activities taking place, you may not receive any observations.

How do you get your observations? What do you do with them? Just open any emails with the title ‘Report for…….’ and open the attachment which will contain a PDF report. It is helpful if you can reply specifically to the observation. (See example) Any replies you give will be automatically put on the website for us to view, (only Mrs Camicia and I will view these). We will usually check these on a weekly basis. We cannot reply to any comments you make so if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s observations it is best to speak to use directly.
