Helen Taylor3 Aims for this lesson: To understand the importance of recognising atypical development Learning outcomes for this lesson:  To describe what is meant by the term advanced development, gifted, talented and high learning potential.  To describe the characteristics of a child with high learning potential.  To describe the support needs of a child with high learning potential.  To describe how high learning potential might affect other areas of development.  To describe what other additional needs a child with high learning potential might have.

7 The National Association of Gifted Children has changed it’s name to Potential Plus UK. They now use the term a child with high learning potential rather than a gifted child. Schools still use the terms gifted and talented. Session ten. Helen Taylor7

9 Increase cognitive abilities can affect…. Relationships with peers Behaviour – feel different to others Behaviour – get bored, lack of stimulation Social and emotional difficulties Physical – not interested in physical activities Session ten. Helen Taylor9

10 Increase cognitive abilities can affect…. Social development if play is at a different level from peers Behaviour if a child is frustrated due to under stimulation If a child is not being challenged this will ultimately affect development and they will not achieve their potential. 11 Activity Create a fact sheet, leaflet or poster for other early years’ practitioners about the importance of meeting individual needs of gifted and talented children. This should include the following information: A definition of the terms gifted, talented and a ‘high learning potential’ child. The characteristics of a ‘high learning potential’ child. The support needs of a ‘high learning potential’ child. The additional needs that a child with ‘high learning potential’ may have. Session ten. Helen Taylor11

What are the benefits of early recognition of advanced development? What additional support and resources could be provided for the child?
