Heather Karsten Dept. Plant Science hdk3@psu.edu Teach: Sustainable Agriculture Science & Policy Principles & Practices of Organic Agriculture Ecology of Agricultural Systems Emerging Issues in the Plant Sciences

Sustainable Dairy Cropping Systems Project Evaluation of conservation dairy cropping systems designed to produce all forage, feed, & some fuel for typical PA dairy farm; reduce off-farm inputs & environmental impact Heather Karsten, Plant Science

Sustainable Cropping Systems for Dairy Farms in the Northeastern US Project Team: Craig Altemose (2010-2012), PSU Cooperative Extension Dir. Centre Co. Douglas Beegle, PSU Plant Science Timothy Beck, PSU Ag Business Mgmt Extension Educator, Cumberland Co. William Curran, PSU Plant Science Curtis Dell, USDA-ARS Soil science Jeffrey Hyde (2010-2012), PSU, Agricultural Economics Ronald Hoover, PSU Coordinator of On-Farm Research Virginia Ishler, PSU Animal Science Heather Karsten, PSU Plant Science, Project Director Peter Kleinman, USDA-ARS, Soil Science Roger Koide (2010-2012), PSU Horticulture, Mycorrhiza Glenna Malcolm, PSU Research Associate Tom Richard, PSU Agricultural and Biological Engineering John Tooker, PSU Entomology Graduate Students: Elina Snyder, Agronomy; Gustavo Camargo, Agricultural & Biological Engineering; Kristen Haider, Ecology; Maggie Douglas, Entomology; Emily Duncan, Soil Science; Robert Meinen, Soil Science; Rachel Milliron, Agronomy Technical Support: Andrew Aschwanden, Sarah Cornellise, Justin Dillon, Scott Harkcom, Gordon Folmar, Matt Peoples, David Sandy, Louis Saporito, Agronomy Research Farm Team Research Assistants: Caitlin Andler, Stephanie Bailey, Fabien Balaguer,, Benjamin Crooke, Dianna Dúran, Brian Gray, Joshua Hibit, Curtis Kennedy, Marissa Keys, Andrew Kirk, Allison Lush, Heidi Musshafen, Veronica LePasi, Andrew Puglia, Sarah Rihl, Adam Seit, Erika Semaine, Julie Schubert, Joshua Walker

Sustainable Dairy Cropping Systems Project Cropping system strategies conserve soil, nutrients, energy, & biodiversity. Examples: – continuous soil cover with perennials, double crops with winter annuals – no-till & manure injection – IPM, diverse rotations – alternative weed control practices Monitoring multiple performance indicators Examples: – crop & dairy herd production – nutrient losses, soil health – pest populations, beneficial insects – profitability – energy use, greenhouse gas emissions Relevant grants: NESARE Agroecosystems NIFA Dairy CAP CIG NRCS EPA Center for Nutrient Solutions Plans to simulate impact at watershed scale

Host Field Days with Advisory Panel Members Project website: http://plantscience.psu.edu/research/areas/crop-ecology-and- management/cropping-systems

2009 CIG NRCS with 4 Cooperative Extension educators - 4 commercial manure haulers > 10 cooperating farmers 2 cover crop roller-crimpers - Farms field days with haulers Landisville Field Day 2010 On-farm Demonstrations & Outreach to promote Adoption
