2 The Early Years 1647 Massachusetts Bay Colony sets guidelines for education 50 families – elementary school 100 families – Latin school 1790 Pennsylvania (and later other states) start free education, but only for the poor 1837 Horace Mann heads Massachusetts State Board of Education

3 Industrialization and Change 1840s Religion becomes involved in educational curriculums and schools 1851 Massachusetts passes first compulsory education law 1864 Congress makes it illegal for Native Americans to be taught in native language 1871 UNIVERITY OF ARKANSAS is established as only land grant university in the state (Go Hogs!)

4 Segregation 1870s Civil War Reconstruction and beginning of racially segregated education 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson in Louisiana makes school segregation legal 1917 Smith-Hughes Act gives federal funding to vocational education

5 A Change is Coming 1945 The War is Over!! G.I. Bill sends thousands of soldiers scholarships 1946 Mendez v. Westminster 1948 The Educational Testing Service is born and teachers wept 1954 Brown v. Board of Education states segregated schools are not equal 1957 Central High School crisis
