3  Computer: Houses hardware necessary to make the computer work.  The hardware includes:  Hard drive  Memory  Processor  CD drive  All connected by cables enabling the Operating System to communicate between each piece. CB 1.2, 2.1

4  Hard Drive  This is where the Windows Operating System and all applications and data files are stored. CB 1.2, 2.1

5  Memory: RAM  (random access memory)  Is memory that can be read from or written to by a computer or other devices. Information stored in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off. CB 1.2, 2.1

6  Desktops  All-in-OneTablets  Laptops  2-in-1 CB 1.6

7  Look for a button near or with this symbol: Press this button to turn computer ON CB 1.3

8  First things first!  Make sure its plugged in.  Make sure your wires are connected in the back.  Locate its power button.  Determine if it has two power buttons.  Monitor  Desktop  Press and release the power button.  A light should appear on or near the power button.  The computer should begin to start up. Press this button to turn computer ON CB 1.3

9  BUT NOTHING HAPPENED!?!?  Don’t Panic!!  Don’t go get the hammer!!  You still have options!! CB 1.3

10  Tap the enter button on the keyboard Or  Move you mouse around a little Or  Do both  Now wait until the computer fully starts up. CB 1.3

11  Save you documents.  Log out of your e-mail, Facebook, etc.  Close all open windows.  Left click once on the start button.  Find ‘Shut Down’ and click. CB 1.3

12  Use it to type with  Device used to tell the computer what to do  Your own writing  Most of the time you will use the mouse and keyboard CB 1.4

14  Lets you “point” at different areas of screen  “Click” to make something happen on the screen  The mouse allows you to tell the computer to do things. CB 1.5

15  “Clicking” means pressing down on the left mouse button and releasing it When you press down it makes a clicking sound Usually you don’t move the mouse when you click Hold it steady while you press down Left Button Right Button CB 1.5

16  Used to select an option  Menu will display  Options to choose from  Remember: The mouse is the object attached to the computer that you move with your hand. The cursor is the “pointer” on the screen that moves the mouse. CB 1.5

18  Is TWO clicks  Done very quickly without moving the mouse  Sometimes this is hard to do  Takes practice  Double-click on certain things on the screen has a special meaning  Different from a regular click  Usually means “open this thing”  With text it helps you select words and sentences easily CB 1.5

19 Start Button-allows you to open menus and start applications Taskbar-used to switch between open windows and applications Icons-represent applications, files and other parts of the operating system Icons Taskbar System Tray

20 To begin exploring Windows 7, click the Start button. When you click the Start button Start menu appears Gateway to the applications that are on your computer Left side of the Start menu lists programs Right side allows access to common Windows folders (Computer, Documents, for example) Provides access to Help and Support

21 Practice:  Click the Start button  Click (or roll you mouse pointer over) All Programs  Move the mouse pointer to the right and view cascading menus  To exit the menus, click outside the menu area or press Esc on your keyboard The Start menu remembers items you have recently opened and places the icon on the Start menu so you can easily open it next time you open the Start menu. For example, if you recently opened Microsoft Word using Start+All Programs+Microsoft Word, the next time you open the Start menu, you will be able to simply click the Word icon on the left side of the Start menu.

22 Icons Small pictures on the desktop Object icon One type of icon Examples: Computer, Recycle Bin, Chrome *These icons allow you to open files and programs on your computer

23  Shortcut icons  Open an application quickly  Appear on your desktop  Links to files and programs  Add or delete shortcuts without affecting the programs on the computer  Practice:  Place your mouse over the Google Chrome icon  Double-click the icon. Google Chrome will now launch(open)  Click the “X” in top right corner of the application to close it.  Try it over another icon on the Desktop.

24  Click on Start Button  Click on All Programs  Right-click on Adobe Reader  Choose “Send to Desktop”  Now you will see it appear on your Desktop  Double-click the Icon you created, it will open  To delete your Shortcut  Right-click on your Icon  Choose Delete  Choose Yes

25 Taskbar small bar at the bottom of desktop Contains Start Menu Quick Launch bar Icons that are shortcuts for any application you have stored on your computer Notification Area-icons to the right of the time and date, programs you have currently running (example PowerPoint on my taskbar) Microsoft also uses the Notification Area to remind you when software updates are available for download Time/Date Speaker - controls volume and if you have it muted (off)

26  When you open or minimize a window/program, a square button appears on the taskbar that shows the name of the application.  Click on these buttons to maximize the program, or you can right-click on the button and select close from the pop-up menu to end the program.  Once you close the program, the button for that program disappears from the taskbar.

27 PINNING TO TASKBAR  To pin a program to your taskbar  Click your Start button  Find the Microsoft Word program in the list  Right-click on it with your mouse  Choose Pin to Taskbar  Click once on the Word icon you pinned, it will open the program  To delete it  Right-click on Word icon  Choose “Unpin this Program from Taskbar”

28  Windows are rectangular frames to display information  To move a window you click on the Title bar and hold it down and move the mouse and it drags the window  Change size of windows by clicking on minimize and maximize buttons  Restore button  Restores window to original size or double click on Title Bar  Change size of windows also by dragging onto any Four of its borders  “Pointer” changes to a double sided arrow, now you can change it
