2 Preparing Nations, Cities, Organisations and their People About CRISIS Founded 2008 Aim: –To conduct research that will have meaningful and widespread impact on the preparedness to respond to safety and security-related issues. –Supporting evidence-based decision making. Working across 5 levels of analyses: –Individual, Organisational, City, National, International UK partners: CLG, DEFRA, DfT, TRANSEC, HSE, Cabinet Office, Lincolnshire County Council, Warwickshire Police, MoD, Dstl, Scottish Government, National Intelligence Council, Fire Service College, Office of Nuclear Regulation, Staffordshire Fire. International partners: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden. (Ministry of Interior)

Statistical analysis: survey design & analysis. Geographical Information Systems: visualizing & evaluating alternatives. Psychology: human responses/perception, safety culture. Marketing: branding safety, communicating with the public. Operations and Risk Management: systems and procedures. Policy: social policy, implications for health, vulnerable people. Emergency Management: criminology, command & control, operational response.

4 Preparing Nations, Cities, Organisations and their People Evacuation Responsiveness by Government Organisations (ERGO) Aim: To develop models to support preparedness for mass evacuation Collaborators: 10 countries, 140 officials. DG Home €640k Theory: Impact: –Feedback (countries, >110 officials), evacuation workbook, InterCEPt, EU Masterclasses, ISO & BSi, Exchange of Experts –Belgian government, Lincolnshire County Council, Red Cross –Keynotes (NATO, DEFRA, Cabinet Office, EU DGs, EPA, GmF)

5 Preparing Nations, Cities, Organisations and their People Contacts with the Police Aim: Enabling the public to better contact the police Collaborators: Warwickshire Police. 3 month PhD placement, MBA project, KTP, CASE. £250k (ESRC) Comparison with Australia Theory: –Applying a new model of systems thinking (translating lessons from nuclear waste). –Sustainable community engagement. Impact: –Changing the way the public are engaged with. –Aiming for massive savings across Warwickshire Police.

6 Preparing Nations, Cities, Organisations and their People Disaster 2.0: Using Web 2.0 and data integration in disaster response Aim: To understand how Web 2.0 (3.0) can support emergency managers and the public during major disasters Collaborators: –5 countries. EC DG Home/ABS (€650k). Starting May 2011. Desired impacts: –Maturing operational responders use of social media –Building our own application for responders –EU Masterclasses
