CHV20- H OW DO CITIZENS SELECT THEIR GOVERNMENT ?

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY... Canadians typically vote for individuals representing a political party Political parties were formed when people started sharing similar ideas joined together If enough party members were elected, the party could form a government and introduce the member’s ideas to the country Canada has two long established parties: the Liberals and Conservatives

H ISTORY CONT ’ D The New Democratic Party (NDP) which evolved from the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was created in 1960. The Green Party was founded in 1983 with a platform that emphasized environmental issues. The Bloc Quebecois was created in 1991 and only has candidates in Quebec. This party wants Quebec to separate from the Canadian Federal system. The # and names of parties change from time to time and new parties can be created.

P OLITICAL PARTIES Each party has a different “platform”, or package of ideas and policies that hope it will attract voter support. The “planks” of a party’s platform state the party’s position on key issues such as: Economy Health care Foreign policy Unemployment The environment Parties are usually associated with either the “right wing” or “left wing” of the political spectrum

T HE POLITICAL SPECTRUM

LEFT We should change social conditions as quickly as possible Society is not bound by tradition Government should take care of needy persons directly. It has a moral obligation Everyone should have equality of condition The rights of individuals have the highest priority Key industries, banks, transportation, facilities and natural resources should be owned by the government

CENTRE Change of social conditions should take place, but at a cautious rate Tradition is important, but change must be accepted if it is the will of the majority There are many different approaches to caring for the needy Everyone should have equality of opportunity and condition Law and order is important, but the rights of individuals come first Some form of government management of the economy is necessary. It won’t look after itself

RIGHT The present system should be maintained. Change only when absolutely necessary and do it slowly and carefully, not suddenly Traditions must be respected. They provide society with stability and security Government should not interfere in the lives of individuals. It provides a helping hand, not a handout. Private charity and self- reliance are better. Everyone should have equality of opportunity Law and order have the highest priority Business and industry should be kept in the hands of private individuals.
