The Distribution of Water 8 th Grade Curriculum –Southwest Middle School

Water Water is essential for all life. So essential in fact that it makes up the majority of Earth as well as the majority of our body weight. For example: – ~60% of our body is water – 70% of our brain is water – More than 80% of our blood is water – Almost 90% of our lungs are water

The Structure of Hydrosphere Oceans—97% of water found here Fresh water—3% of water found here Fresh water distribution: – Ice: 1.762% – Groundwater: 1.7% – Surface Fresh Water: 0.014% – Atmosphere and soil: 0.002%

Water Facts Each person uses 105 gallons/day!! Industry uses more then 10 billion liters/day U.S. farmlands use more than 375 billion liters/day for irrigation Must be purified for safe use Easily polluted

Where is all the Water? Location of the WaterAmount of Water% of Water All the Water on Earth1000mL100% All the salt water970mL97% *** All the fresh water30mL3% Freshwater in the Polar caps 24mL2.4 % *** Ground water and surface water 6mL.6% *** Unpolluted useable water 1 drop0.0003% ***

Oceans What bodies of water hold the largest amount of water? – Oceans! The largest bodies of water on Earth Contain salt water only

Ice – Icebergs: a large piece of freshwater ice floating in open waters – Glaciers: any large mass of ice that moves slowly over land

Groundwater What is groundwater? – The water found in cracks and pores in sand, gravel and rocks below the earth’s surface What is an aquifer? – A porous rock layer underground that is a reservoir for water

Lack of Water Drought- lack of water caused by low rainfall. Irrigation- to water by artificial means such as diverting streams, flooding or spraying.

Pollution Since water is easily polluted, we must clean it before we can drink it! – Can lead to water shortages – Millions die every year from lack of water / poor quality of water – Underdeveloped countries have poor methods to clean water.

Ways to Conserve Water: Take shorter showers. Fix leaky faucets and toilets. Conserve electricity. Only flush toilets when necessary. Run the dish washer and washer only when they are full and need to be washed.
