Remote Sensing Dr. Ahmad BinTouq abintouq@uaeu.ac.ae http://faculty.uaeu.ac.ae/~abintouq GEO440: GIS for Urban & Regional Planning

Overview What is Remote Sensing? How can we use Remote Sensing for GIS, when, where and why?

Remote Sensing Remote sensing: is the art, science, and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment through the process of recording, measuring and interpreting imagery and digital representation of energy patterns derived from non-contact sensor systems (American Society for Photogrammetric and RS).American Society for Photogrammetric and RS

Remote Sensing Collect information about the earth surfaces. It provides a reliable and cost-effective means of studying the natural and human environment. Can be used for protection, natural resources management and planning.

RS for Urban Planning  Development of urban planning applications using RS.  Monitoring Urban Growth.  Mapping cities and communities.  Planning and Policy: – To study land use, urban zoning. – To detect changes in land use from agricultural land to a construction site or housing development.

RS and Planning  RS support multi-scale urban planning.  Three scales of urban and rural planning, such as: – City and town system planning. – Urban master planning. – Detailed urban planning.

RS and Planning  Examples: Categorizing natural disaster damage assessment using satellite-based. Comparison of remote sensing image processing techniques to identify tornado damage areas from Landsat TM data.

GIS for Population GIS can be used for modelling the relationship among population variables. The advantages of using GIS for population studies includes: – easy manipulation of data, capability to carry out advanced spatial analysis, creation of various maps in a short time, and improving the overall visualization of census data.

When can we use RS for urban planning? When we can not use RS for urban planning? What are the applications of RS for GIS?
