3 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR SPORT & PHYSICAL EDUCATION Guideline 1. Children should accumulate at least 60 minutes, and up to several hours, of age-appropriate physical activity on all, or most days of the week. This daily accumulation should include moderate and vigorous physical activity. Guideline 2. Children should participate in several bouts of physical activity lasting 15 minutes or more each day. Guideline 3. Children should participate each day in a variety of age- appropriate physical activities designed to achieve optimal health, wellness, fitness, and performance benefits. Guideline 4. Extended periods (periods of two hours or more) of inactivity are discouraged for children, especially during the daytime hours.

4 STAGGERING STATISTICS 60% of children ages 5 to 10 had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease In NJ 38% of 6 th graders are obese or overweight (NJ Dept of Health) There are nearly twice as many overweight children and almost three times as many overweight adolescents as there were in 1980. (State of NJ, Dept of Education)

5 PHILOSOPHY Development of physical fitness Development of motor skills Understanding of the principles of exercise through game and sport. Positive attitudes, behaviors and respect for self and others are a requirement The goal of the program is enjoyment of physical activity, resulting in the desire to continue exercise throughout the students’ lifetime.

6 Grading Criteria 2 categories 1. Student Preparation (90 points) 2. Teacher Defined (MAX of 20 points). This grade is determined by our PE Rubric –Student start with 5 for Teacher Defined…its up to them to earn more or lose 

(ND) Follows directions Regularly & seldom needs repetition. (ND) Often unable to Follow directions. Requires repetition. (-1 point)* Removal from class as a result of not following directions. (-5 points)* Participation Focused on task & demonstrates desire for success. Participates with effort & enthusiasm. (ND) Participates daily usually with effort & enthusiasm. (ND) Participates daily but shows minimal effort. (-1 point)* Not focused on task & often shows no effort. (-2 points)* Sportsmanshi p Demonstrates a positive attitude toward self & others. Shows leadership qualities on a daily basis. (ND) Strives toward attaining a positive attitude toward self & others. (ND) Often distracts others. Behavior is inappropriate at times. (-1 point)* Often disrespectful & distracting to others. (-2 points)* Skill/Fitness Shows knowledge of movement concepts & principles of exercise through participation. (-1 point)* Demonstrates no concern or motivation to gain knowledge of movement concepts & principles of exercise through participation. (-2 points)*

9 Home Access Center You must COMBINE the grades for the two categories (Student Preparation and Teacher Defined) For example: 90/90 on Student Prep and 5/20 on Teacher Defined Grade would be 95/110=86 (S)

10 PROPER ATTIRE STUDENTS MUST CHANGE THEIR SCHOOL CLOTHES IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS. Shorts (Girls, no Soffee shorts T-shirts with sleeves sweatshirt sweatpants

15 HEALTH To move students toward health literacy. The ability to obtain, interpret, understand and apply basic health information. Lifeskills (explained on next slide) Nutrition Endocrine system Tobacco Suicide Prevention

16 HEALTH Life Skills: –Reviewing and practicing important concepts and skills –6 th Grade focus: communication skills, resolving conflicts, assertiveness, social skills, resisting tobacco, and media influences on teens.
