The Truth About Indoor Shooting Range Ventilation

What You Need To Know About Indoor Shooting Range Ventilation The state of the industry Industry available systems How these systems work Why these systems are available Figuring out what you need NIOSH / OSHA Guidelines The problems with todays filtration systems How much does ventilation really cost The Rushing Air Treated Air System

The State Of The Industry The Truth About Indoor Shooting Range Ventilation : There are only a handful of ventilation systems focused on shooting ranges. When engineers developed the technology that runs in most of today’s systems, it was designed around a guideline that was written in 1975! These antiquated systems create problems for range owners: have much higher energy demands poor air filtration = un-healthy environment higher risk for employees and shooters higher liability risk for OSHA fines

Changing Your Air Filtration System Into One Of Your Greatest Strategic Advantages Ventilation Systems Available Today Re-circulating - This system has an exchange rate of 75/25, 75% fresh air, 25% exhausted air, Heavily Reliant On HEPA Filters. 2 - 4 Filter Banks, High Operating Cost Per Lane Purge - 100% Fresh Air no cooling or heating, sometimes filtered, energy efficient.

How these systems work Recirculating Systems: This system has an exchange rate of 75% fresh air, 25% exhausted air. The lead is shot down range, through the exhaust, passes through several filter banks, then returns into the shooting area. Heavily reliant On HEPA Filters Range owner must pay to change out 2 - 4 Filter Banks Higher energy and filter consumption = higher operating cost per lane. Purge Systems: Fresh Air passes through one end and out the other. No ability to cool the range No ability to heat the range Sometimes filtered Much more energy efficient than recirculating ranges Image Credit RVD Inc

Why there are only a handful of ventilation systems focused on shooting ranges? Today, our world moves faster, smarter, more efficiently –We aimed to change this zero sum calculus into a net gain system for range owners Because no one had to innovate a system that could adapt to an ever changing technological landscape

How do I determine what I need? Some say: “Why can’t you use a big o’l fan!” There is much more to a range than a fan and a filter. We suggest that every range owner become better informed. Here is how to calculate the required CFM to meet NIOSH recommended 50-75lfm Height of ceiling x Width of bay x 75lfm = CFM 8’ x 38’ x 75lfm = 22,000cfm

The Moving Goalposts of Liability OSHA has approximately 2,200 inspectors The government will only continue to create more regulations, requirements, and restrictions for indoor shooting range Air quality & safety Many of the approximately 400 violations at gun shops and shooting ranges cited by OSHA or its state equivalents since 2009 have focused on lead management procedures Since Jan. 20, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued 3,373 new regulations, equaling 29,770 pages in the Federal Register and totaling approximately 29,770,000 words, according to a count of the regulations published in the Federal Register. That’s 3,373 distinct rules published by the EPA since January 20, 2009 that cover greenhouse gases, air quality, emissions and hazardous substances.

NIOSH Guidelines for lead exposure The Federal OSHA General Industry Lead Standard Says:

They Cost more than they should to operate They are dependent on filters & filter maintenance. Should either be missed or cut, your system is no longer operating at engineered specifications, and your employees are at risk due to poorly filtered air The Problems With Industry Standard Air Filtration Systems:

Let's Realize A Few Points: ▪ You’re moving air through a lot of square footage ▪ Heating and / or cooling that space can be expensive ▪ Energy bills for range owners can be excessive A Tailor Designed Ventilation System Can Help Cut Your Energy Bill By Thousands So Just How Much Of Your Energy Bill Can You Expect To Pay?

Re-Circulating Air $3.25 / 100% Treated Fresh Air $0.75 If you’re paying $3.25 per lane/hour with a re-circulating system, you could be spending up to $9,000 a month per 10 Lanes, where as if you're paying $0.75 you will be spending up to $2000 a month for the same 10 lanes. $3.25 x 10 Lanes = $32.50 x 10 Hours A Day = $325.00 x 26 Days A Month = $8450 $0.75 x 10 Lanes = $7.50 x 10 Hours A Day = $75.00 x 26 Days A Month = $1950 Let’s Break Down Energy Consumption

Re-circulating Pre Filter Quantity 19 x $64.80 x 2 (Bi Weekly) = $129.60 x 12 Months = $1,555.20 Mid Filter Quantity 19 x $294.87 x 1 (Monthly) x 12 Months = $3,538.44 HEPA Filter Quantity 12 x $300.00(8-12 Months) = $3,600.00 Annual Cost: $8,693.64* Rushing Air's Treated Fresh Air System Pre Filter Quantity 16 x $4.00 x 2 (Bi Weekly) $128.00 x 12 Months = $1,536,00 Final Filter Exchange 16 x $64.00 x 2 (Bi Monthly) $1,024.00 x 6 Months = $6,144.00 Annual Cost: $7,680.00 Annual Net Savings: $1,013.64** How Much Does Filtering Really Cost?

They Say If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It…. 01 02 - But it is broke. The indoor shooting range air filtration industry has been getting by because… The single biggest mistake range owners make is that they do what others have done, almost following blindly. – Which costs them in additional labor hours, downtime, increased energy consumption, and with constant liability concerns There had to be better way, there IS a better way.. At lower energy costs, lower filter dependency, and keeps range owners above reproach from government regulation.

The Answer? Rushing Air’s 100% Treated Fresh Air We Help Range Owners Increase Profitability, We Reduce The Operation Cost Our approach to solving these problems: Cut energy consumption Reduce filter costs Decrease labor costs Maintain range uptime (eliminate range shut downs due to filter replacements) Avoid safety risks and liability Old systems have little to no margin for error. Delay or miss a filter change, your system drops below required specifications Your employees are at risk due to poorly filtered air You are liable for placing employees and shooters in unsafe areas

What About Safety? With eliminating the inherent need for multiple stages of filtration – The shooters’ environment will ALWAYS have 100% Fresh Air.

How Do We Do It? S P C This lead to a system that was efficient & cost effective We got rid of the intrinsic need of 3-4 stages of filtration We learned that shoving air into smaller ‘pipelines’ aren’t efficient & We moved filters to the exhausted side that does NOT require the need of costly HEPA Filters but captures 99.3% of the contaminated air

So What Does This Mean For The Range Owner? Far greater efficiency 01 0202 03 0404 Lower filter costs No downtime due to filter changes Far exceed OSHA and EPA requirements We get you back to building a business, a brand, encourage loyalty, and separate your range from your competition

We are proud to sponsor this NSSF event because our goals are so precisely aligned with their program. You make safety a priority – that’s why you’re here Range safety doesn’t have to be expensive A safer range makes business sense The NSSF workshop is a valuable resource where range owners can learn how advances in technology make safe and responsible range operation more profitable.
