World War II TOTAL WAR

In total war, all citizens (not just soldiers) are a major part of warfare. They support the war with production, resources, money.

It also means that all citizens (not just soldiers) are targeted in the war.

A new tactic of “area bombing” or “terror bombing” began, where entire cities (not just military or manufacturing targets)are bombed.

Battle of Britain When Germans dropped bombs all over London every night for 7 months in 1940.

Battle of Britain Germany wanted to weaken Britain. They wanted to prove that Germany was a superior air-power.

Battle of Britain Over 23,000 British civilians were killed. Over 32,000 British civilians wounded. In the end, Britain remained the superior air power.

Bombing of Dresden Incendiary bombs were a new kind of bomb filled with combustible chemicals designed to start and spread fires.

Bombing of Dresden In 1945, Britain and the US attacked the German city of Dresden. The bombs created firestorms. Basically, the air caught on fire.

Bombing of Dresden Over 35,000 Germans were killed (Germany says it is closer to 100,000). Due to the nature of the attack, hard to tell.

Bombing of Dresden Dresden had a large civilian population (lots of refugees, hospitals, etc.). It was not a military center.

Atomic Bombs Atomic bombs were a new kind of weapon that were as strong as tens of thousands of pounds of TNT.

Atomic Bomb An atomic bomb was powerful enough to destroy an entire city. The USA dropped two atomic bombs on Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) to end World War II (1945).

Atomic Bomb Initial Blast- – The bombs created shockwaves for a one-mile radius around ground zero. Buildings were instantly destroyed and turned to debris.

Atomic Bomb Firestorm- – A giant fireball emerged around ground zero and in a two-mile radius. Everything flammable caught on fire. Glass melted, etc.

The fires and light from the blast were so bright that images of the people were imprinted on the buildings and pavement.

Atomic bomb Radiation – People who were closer to ground zero died immediately from radiation (sometimes before symptoms even presented).

Atomic Bomb Radiation- – The radiation hung around in the air and soil for a long time. So people who were not around for the initial blast could still be exposed.

Atomic Bombs Because of the nature of the atomic bomb, exact death tolls are unknown. At least 200,000 people were killed.
