6 College Prep English Dept. goals Common Core principles of READING, WRITING, SPEAKING & LISTENING. Develop Critical Thinking Skills. At each grade level, students are guided to meet dept. learning results.

7 The Literature Semester 1 - Funny in Farsi -The House on Mango Street -Semester 2 -The Alchemist -Stargirl -Romeo & Juliet (graphic novel)

8 Critical Reading & SSR Students read for inferred meaning, figurative language, themes at work, symbolism, point of view, & imagery. Read & analyze fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Each class begins with 10 minutes of SSR of a book of the students’ choice. Students aim for 300 SSR pages per quarter & do a book chat with me later in qtr.

9 Writing Instruction Develop Fluency = “Zero” Writing (journals) Organization/Structure/Grammar Write in four essay genres: narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative Develop clear thesis statements Support point of view with evidence (facts, quotes) and analysis. Identify, use, and cite varied research sources.

11 Speaking & Listening Informal discussions & planned oral presentations; oral quizzes Organize & prepare ideas, improve focus, appropriate tone and diction. Identify key points in a presenter’s words; take notes and analyze what was important. Look deeper – explain & connect new ideas to previous learning/experience.

15 A grade is earned through a student’s accumulation of points in comparison to the total points possible in the semester. 80 percent of grade over semester 20 percent on final exam Students expected to have needed supplies Communicate if work will be late or you need extension
