6. College Prep English Dept. goals Common Core principles of READING, WRITING, SPEAKING & LISTENING. Develop Critical Thinking Skills. At each grade level, students are guided to meet dept. learning results.

7. The Literature Semester 1 - Funny in Farsi -The House on Mango Street -Semester 2 -The Alchemist -Stargirl -Romeo & Juliet (graphic novel)

8. Critical Reading & SSR Students read for inferred meaning, figurative language, themes at work, symbolism, point of view, & imagery. Read & analyze fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Each class begins with 10 minutes of SSR of a book of the students’ choice. Students aim for 300 SSR pages per quarter & do a book chat with me later in qtr.

Writing Instruction Develop Fluency = “Zero” Writing (journals) Organization/Structure/Grammar Write in four essay genres: narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative Develop clear thesis statements Support point of view with evidence (facts, quotes) and analysis. Identify, use, and cite varied research sources.
