3 IDENTIFICATION OF PUPILS Pupils who have been identified as either facing barriers to their learning or who are underperforming in 4 or more subjects can be referred to a Learning Coach (LC) by Progress Managers (PM) or members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) for one-to-one support. PMs will refer pupils based on one type of referral – slightly different for each Key Stage. Each Year Group has an allocated number of one-to-one spaces – the majority being in KS4 and KS5. With all referrals to a LC, the support offered is strategy and skills-based, not subject-based. During the year, pupils may also be identified for focussed group workshops. (LC/PMs/SLT) The Year 11 PM and the LC will liaise in selecting a discrete tutor group for mentoring. ONE-TO-ONE COACHING LCs work with pupils for a half-hour appointment, once a week. Depending on the pupil and the nature of the referral, this is usually between 5 and 10 sessions. Pupils are issued with appointment slips during registration to produce to teachers to verify the appointment. After an initial meeting with pupils, the LC will make a decision about the suitability of the intervention and liaise with the PM. Feedback is shared at regular intervals with PMs. If pupils do not attend well, and have no valid excuses for missing appointments, they are removed off the LC list after 3 appointment attempts. The PMs are informed of poor attendance and a lack of engagement. After having built some rapport with each pupil, and gaining insight into the specific needs of each individual, a programme of support is put in place. Where necessary, LCs will liaise with subject teachers to offer the best possible support for the pupil. At the end of the intervention, pupils fill in an Exit Questionnaire and the LC sends an Exit Referral to the relevant PM.
