Educational experience of Marijampolės Sūduvos gymnasium

Marijampolės Sūduvos gymnasium 1.I – IV classes; ages- 15-18 2.954 students; 3.33 classes all in all; 4.In each class– 28,9 students; 5.73 teachers. 6.5 days a week; 7 lessons (8.00-14.45)

Sūduvos gymnasium–a school of success for each child

+ FLEXIBLE TEAM (common objective) PROBLEMS SUCCESS SECURE SURROUNDINGS, POSITIVE EMOTIONS + +

In a more picturesque way......to create school of success for each student providing an opportunity to choose his own path (not standard quality for everybody but treating every student individually).

Why is Sūduvos gymnasium attractive for a child? 1.Innovation and attractiveness of learning infrastructure; 2.The value is a child, his/her safety, requirements, professional career; 3.Teachers’ team that is responsible and not afraid of changes; 4. Management of a contemporary lesson (working with students of all abilities); 5.The results (a gifted child) as an indicator of education quality; 6.The culture of evaluation and self-assessment; 7.Meaningful traditions and events - the possibility of self- expression for children (students’ parliament, Sūduvos TV, “Klevelis”, “Tėkmė”).

A person is like a book.. some content of which is written by school...

Attention to newly arrived students 1.The action “September” - a month without „twos“ and an adaptation month for newly arrived students; 2.The festive celebration “It is warmer Together” (in October). Purpose: to incorporate new students into the life of school, to introduce traditions of the gymnasium, cultural life, to form positive leisure attitude; 3.In December an analysis is carried out for newly arrived students about their feelings in our gymnasium; 4.“The open-door day” for parents is held in December; 5.Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the first term results is made and sent to the former schools of students. Ways to help each person are provided; 6. A round-table discussion is held with representatives from students‘ previous schools.

Levels of Help 1.Specialists‘ level: Psychologist's research (September) “Learning style of our 1st year students”  Teachers- get recommendations of how to work with students having different learning styles ;  Tutors- organise class meetings and give recommendations to students how to learn;  Parents- in the meetings with parents tutors present learning styles of their classes and help with learning techniques.

Levels of Help Teacher’s help menu: A teacher can make a disabled child capable and a capable one disabled... Firstly, a teacher must boost a child's ego: if a student trusts his teacher - great, if not, – it will be like with a horse and water: you can take the horse to the water but you cannot force it to drink. Rolando Marzano

Levels of Help 3. Administration‘s level: For basic education a student can choose one more lesson to develop his/her Lithuanian or mathematical skills in small groups that are formed according to academic and practical abilities of students;  In basic education diagnostic tests are used for students and then students are grouped in classes with varying levels of talented and weaker ones (different timetables) ;  Chosen subjects are offered from the first class: Biotechnology, French, career education, etc.

Biotechnology laboratory Students from the 9th to 12th grade can study a module of classical and modern biotechnology (a possibility to enrich the academic knowledge of practical skills in a research laboratory).

"Career day – a fair of universities"

Secondary Education 1. We form an individual plan for education with each student and he is offered a few choices:  An individual plan that is focused on direction of studies (humanitarian, social, biomedical, technological and physical studies);  An individual plan that can be chosen freely. 2. Eight subjects that students can choose from. The most popular ones are biotechnologies, economy, psychology, Business English, the third foreign language (French) and drawing. 3. A student is given an opportunity (flexibility of a timetable) to move “freely” in groups and streams.

1)Do you want to study intensively? 2) Do you have a fear of exams? 3)Have you got any serious gaps in your knowledge? IDEA – school of professional help for a student

Consultative education center It is a school of help for every student that is intended to receive either individual or group consultations to fill in gaps, gain more knowledge, prepare for exams and even life; This is how every student can achieve enormous success and be filled with true joy; 27 teachers work in this center.

Why is it good for a student? Teachers of various subjects work there (a possibility to choose); Long- term/ short- term groups are easily formed (even for one consultation); A possibility for a person who was sick for a long time to pass his or her tests, those who had home learning can also take tests at school and sportsmen can come there and get help with homework; Tutors – and smart students (a possibility to explain to each); Help for brilliant students to expand knowledge and/or fill in gaps.

Why is it good for a teacher? 1.A consultation is not a lesson; 2.A possibility to work in small groups (even individually); 3.A real possibility to differentiate and individualize; 4.No marks are written; 5.A possibility to get to know students better; 6.A chance to “strengthen”, consolidate, generalize certain topics, cycles of lessons and units; 7.Positive child's motivation– it can lead him to success.

“ Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live the whole life believing that it is stupid.” Albert Einstein

Philosophy of our gymnasium “It is not enough to acquire knowledge, you have to learn how to get a high rate of interest.” J. W. Goethe
