MFL at Manor Road Primary School ‘FRENCH’

The National Curriculum Aims Aims: The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions.

Children can continuously improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. Children can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. Children can discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

OFSTED Opportunities to develop French outside of lesson time (Greetings and registers etc). Effectiveness in progression in all 4 skills. Resources. Evidence of work in books, folders or photographs for KS2. Accurate pronunciation and grammar.

What is new? National Curriculum 2014 / scheme of work New resources Whole school plan Updated policy A wider variety of dual language books in the library.

Progression in MFL. Key learning is used to inform teachers of what they need to teach. The scheme of work then ‘adds flesh’ to the key learning document.

Assessment Map out for French topics and identify outcomes / goals. Familiarise ourselves with Year Group Expectations. Try to find the best fit statement for each child under every heading ‘Listening’, ‘Speaking’, ‘Reading’, ‘Writing’ and ‘Grammar’. Decide if the child is entering, developing or secure. Moderate with other teachers if unsure of child’s attainment.

I can statements to assess children.

KS1 Evidence Role play areas provide children with the chance to experiment with French.i.e. Food labels have been used in the kitchen role play area.

Year 3 display boards are changed regularly in order to support the current topic in French. KS2

As well as a display board to support current teaching in French, numbers, days of the week, colours and the alphabet remain up for children to see all year round.

We encourage children in Year 3 to read French books and look in French dictionaries for enjoyment.

In Year 3 we have French resources that remain throughout the year: Colours Days of the week French greetings The French alphabet

Year 4 Year 4 are using longer sentences to ensure continuity of progression. Children in Year 4 are encouraged to repeat French vocabulary orally with their teacher and then create sentences from memory independently.

MFL around Manor Road The PE store has a variety of sports labelled in French. Children are asked to remember a French sport each PE lesson. We aim to provide children with opportunities to develop French at Manor Road.

Toilet labels. Classroom doors and doors around school are labelled in French

Classroom labels.

Termly display boards are updated in order to support learning of French.

As MFL coordinator I have … I have carried out a number of observations in KS1 and KS2. (Elm, Year 4,5 and 6) I have carried out a work scrutiny off all classes in school and used this to create targets for MFL at Manor Road.

I have looked at and evaluated planning. All classes in KS2 are using ‘Light Bulb Languages’ to plan their lessons and adapting when appropriate. All planning is linked to the National Curriculum and the expectations for each year group. Whenever possible, I have incorporated French into our everyday school lives. I have put up new displays termly and encouraged all members of staff to incorporate French into their own displays in class.

More displays around school.

I have lead a French dinner time club for students in Year 3 and Year 4 to join in with activities such as role play, singing, matching activities and oral practice. I have attended a full day course for MFL leaders and gathered new information to bring back to school.

French day! On Thursday 14 th July we are holding a French day at Manor Road! Each class will focus on a specific French topic during their morning sessions.i.e. Notre Dame, French foods or Bastille Day. We will then hold an assembly where we share what we have learnt and present any of our creations.
