1 Q: To which organisations do these logos belong?

2 A: This is the United Nations logo. The UN began on 24th October 1945 when many countries joined together to try and prevent the kind of devastation of world wide war which had happened twice in the space of the previous 30 years. This is the United Nations Humanitarian Refugee Agency logo. The UNHRA began on 14 th December 1950. It was only meant to exist for 3 years but is still working hard today. It aids displaced persons fleeing persecution.

4 The 1951 Refugee Convention spells out that a refugee is someone who: "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country." Although small, Belgium bravely tried to defend itself but to no avail. The war in Europe had begun in earnest. Have a look at this political cartoon. Can you work out what it is showing?

6 Did you know that from the start of WW1 there were refugees in Gloucestershire? Hundreds of Belgian Refugees arrived in towns and villages in the county. According to this source, what kind of welcome did they get? Old school records show that from January to August 1915, Belgian children were enrolled at Painswick School and at Marling School in Stroud.
