4 4 Break-Out/Mission Mission Statements An effective mission statement is a simple statement of what you are expected to achieve and why An effective mission statement is concise, time bound and action oriented An effective mission statement is clear on meaning - if it can be misunderstood, it will be! An effective mission statement is coherent with the mission and the strategic intentions of the enterprise An effective mission statement focuses on what is most important An effective mission statement will help you focus & prioritise

5 5 Break-out/Mission Mission Statement – Test Questions Is it clear, simple and time bound? Is it action oriented? Will everyone in my group understand it? Have I avoided management jargon? Will it help people to focus? Does it tell others what we will achieve or is it just a role description? Will it help people to make decisions/trade-offs? Will it help people to understand what not to do? Does the mission connect people to what’s going on in the enterprise?

6 6 Break-Out/Mission Goals and Measures (SMART criteria) S pecific M easurable A ttainable R esults Oriented R esults Oriented T ime Related T ime Related Specific goals clearly state what the employee is expected to accomplish. Measurable goals define in credible, and wherever possible, quantitative terms what will be achieved. Attainable goals should be challenging but not impractical. They should be “stretch” goals that are rigorous but feasible. Results-oriented goals focus on the achievement of critical outcomes. Time-related goals include a deadline and milestones for completion
