4 Childhood Obesity in Dallas County 36% of children are overweight or obese Ages 10-17, 20% are obese Obesity can lead to more than 20 chronic illnesses, including: -Diabetes -Cardiovascular Disease -Some types of cancer One of the most common, costly, & preventable causes of death.

6 Link between Low Income & Obesity Lack of access to healthy, affordable foods. Fewer opportunities for physical activity. Lack of education. Greater exposure to marketing of obesity-related products.

7 Our Program Snack, Play, Live! After school program held at the Oak Cliff Boys and Girls Club that includes: -Fun/interactive healthy eating lessons -Many variations of physical activity -Guest appearances by professional athletes -Informational brochures for parents

9 Our Interactive Healthy Eating Lessons Comparing healthy foods to junk foods Teach food groups and proper serving sizes Teach children healthy snack recipes for home Provide healthy snacks for children while at the Oak Cliff Boys and Girls Club

11 Professional Athletes Local professional athletes will visit and promote the importance of healthy lifestyle habits. Volunteer basis during the various sport’s off seasons Teams involved include: Dallas Mavericks Dallas Cowboys FC Dallas

13 Goals of Snack Play Live! Increase number of active members at the Oak Cliff Boys and Girls Club location: -To influence and educate more youth in the Oak Cliff community. Increase awareness: -Importance of healthy eating habits -Importance of physical activity Children to spend less time doing sedentary activities.

14 How will we measure our success? Up-to-date tracking of active members since initiation of program. To asses full year results we will conduct wellness tests, including physical fitness benchmarks and dietary awareness. Children will be spending less time doing sedentary activities while enrolled in this program.
