1. Political Parties Group of people that come together to hold power in government. Have similar beliefs and policies.

2. Democratic Party  strong in the south  favored Texas annexation  represented farmers & laborers  Texas Democratic party copied the way the American Party was set up

3. Whig Party  originally formed by those opposed to US Pres Jackson  represented business and commercial interests  lacked support in the south  opposed Texas annexation

4. American (know-nothing) Party  formed after Whig Party collapsed  tried to keep immigrants from voting  tried to keep immigrants from holding office  held conventions (political meetings) to nominate candidates.

5. Republican Party  Believed slavery should be banned  Had little support in Texas  Joined by many northern Whigs after the Whig party faded
