William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning Thursday, February 11, 2016 Library East Reading Room 3:30-4:30 PM Next Generation Science Standards Coffee Chat

The plan… 1)Eat 2)Shawn Oppliger: Intro and background 3)Exploration of Standards Website 4)A typical (active) lesson 5)Reflection/discussion – What does this mean for Tech?

Introduction to the NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS

ARCHITECTURE OF THE NGSS DCI- Disciplinary Core Ideas SEP- Science and Engineering Practices CCC- Cross Cutting Concepts PE- Performance Expectation

Architecture of the Performance Expectations Integration of 3 Dimensions: Science and Engineering Practices Crosscutting Concepts Disciplinary Core Ideas

Dimension 1 Scientific and Engineering Practices 1.Asking questions (science) and defining problems (engineering) 2.Developing and using models 3.Planning and carrying out investigations 4.Analyzing and interpreting data 5.Using mathematics and computational thinking 6.Constructing explanations (science) and designing solutions (engineering) 7.Engaging in argument from evidence 8.Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information For each, the Framework includes a description of the practice, the culminating 12 th grade learning goals, and what we know about progression over time.

Crosscutting Concepts 1. Patterns 2. Cause and effect 3. Scale, proportion, and quantity 4. Systems and system models 5. Energy and matter 6. Structure and function 7. Stability and change Framework 4-1

Disciplinary Core Ideas Physical Science Life Science Earth Science Engineering and Technology

ARCHITECTURE OF THE NGSS Go to www.nextgenscience.orgwww.nextgenscience.org Click on the Next Generation Science Standards tab. Click on view NGSS Performance Expectation Individually. Search for High School and PS4A Wave Properties Look for HS PS 4-1.

Exploration of HS PS 4-1 What did you find? How are the foundation boxes related to the performance expectations? What questions do you have?

EXEMPLAR LESSON

As you consider each of the following ideas, what did you notice about the lesson?

Whole Group Discussion How does the lesson engage students in the SEP of HS PS4- 1? What key content ideas does this lesson address? How does lesson bring out the CCC of HS PS4- 1?

Science education will involve… lessmore What are the implications of the Vision of the Framework and the NGSS? At your table, brainstorm ideas that you might add to this chart – based on your experience with the exemplar lesson.

How does our chart compare? Is there anything else we need to consider?

Reflection Discuss at your tables the implications of these changes for Michigan Tech. What differences does it imply in our incoming students? What will need to change about our classes? Record your observations on the whiteboards for a broader discussion….

Got more to say? Thanks for your input! Feel free to follow up… mrmeyer@mtu.edu William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning Library 219 7-3000
