Physical & Chemical Properties Topic 8, Quarter 2 Integrated Science

Set up a graphic organizer PhysicalChemical PropertyDefinition: Examples: Notes: Definition: Examples: Notes: ChangeDefinition: Examples: Notes: Definition: Examples: Notes:

Physical Property Characteristic observed of material without changing substances. EXAMPLES: color, brittleness, boiling and melting points, reflectivity, shape, magnetic attraction, state of matter and density

Physical Property Some physical properties can be measured. What physical properties of this water can be measured?

Physical Property How do we identify different materials? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/Gorp.jpg This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported

Physical Changes What happens if you break a piece of chalk? Does it change the identity of the material?

Physical Change Does not change identity of substances in material. EXAMPLES: Changes of state, shape. Separation of substances in mixture, e.g. by evaporation, magnetism, filtering.

Chemical Change A substance changes into another substance or substances. SIGNS: Change of odor, production of gas, release of light or heat energy.

Chemical Change EXAMPLES: Iron rusting, fireworks exploding, burning

Chemical Change Chemical reactions are chemical changes. 2H 2 + O 2 --> 2H 2 O

Chemical Properties Characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a specific chemical change. EXAMPLES: pH, flammability, reactivity with water. Acid is low pH, less than 7. Base is high pH, greater than 7.
