1 Classification of Animals
I can classify organisms based on common characteristics

2 Classification of Animals
Scientists have divided the Animal Kingdom into two main groups: Vertebrates (animals with a backbone) and Invertebrates (animals without a backbone)

3 Animals with backbones can be divided into five more groups:
Vertebrates Animals with backbones can be divided into five more groups: Mammals Birds Reptiles Amphibians Fish

4 Animals without a backbone.
Invertebrates Animals without a backbone.

5 Animals with a backbone.
Vertebrates Animals with a backbone.

6 Arthropods Body is divided into segments Crustaceans
-Segmented body with a hard shell covering Insects -6 legs 3 body parts Arachnids -8 legs 2 body parts

7 Bodies are full of pores and channels that water circulates through
Porifera Bodies are full of pores and channels that water circulates through Sponges

8 Have arms or spines that radiate from center of their body
Echinoderms Have arms or spines that radiate from center of their body Sea Urchins and Starfish

9 Segmented Worms “Annelids”
Bodies that are divided into segments earthworm

10 soft, skin-like organ usually covered with a hard outside shell
Mollusks soft, skin-like organ usually covered with a hard outside shell oyster, mussel, clam, squid, octopus, snail

11 Mammals Give birth to live young.
Feed their babies with their own milk. Are more or less covered with hair. Are warm-blooded.

12 Birds Have feathers. Lay eggs. Are warm-blooded.

13 Reptiles Are cold-blooded. Lay eggs.
Have a dry skin covered with scales.

14 Amphibians Are cold-blooded. Lay eggs. Have a smooth, moist skin.
Are able to live on land as well as in the water.

15 Fish Are cold-blooded. Lay eggs (but some do give birth to live young). Have a moist skin covered in scales. Breathe through gills.

16 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am a mammal. My body is warm and furry. I feed my babies on milk. I give birth to live young.

17 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am a mammal. My body is covered in hair, or fur. I feed my babies on milk. I give birth to live young.

18 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am an amphibian. My body is moist and smooth. I lay eggs. I like to live in or near to water.

19 Arthropod, Proifera, Ecninoderm, Segmented Worm, Mollusk?
What am I? Arthropod, Proifera, Ecninoderm, Segmented Worm, Mollusk? I am an arthropod. My body is segmented into 3 parts and I have 6 legs.

20 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am a bird. My body is warm and covered with feathers. I lay eggs which hatch out into chicks.

21 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
Although I have wings, I am in fact a mammal. My body is covered in hair, not feathers. I feed my babies on milk. I do not lay eggs.

22 Arthropod, Proifera, Ecninoderm, Segmented Worm, Mollusk?
What am I? Arthropod, Proifera, Ecninoderm, Segmented Worm, Mollusk? I am a mollusk. My skin is soft and I have a hard shell.

23 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am a mammal. If you stand very close to me, you will see I have hairs on my body. I feed my babies on milk. I do not lay eggs.

24 What am I? Mammal, Bird, Fish, Amphibian or Reptile?
I am a reptile. My body is covered in dry scales. I lay eggs.

25 Arthropod, Proifera, Ecninoderm, Segmented Worm, Mollusk?
