5 Athletics at Millwood High School Mr. White- Athletics Director awhite@hrsb.ca All Grade 9 students are eligible to compete on any team. This is a great way to meet new people. Fall sports tryouts- check the website/Millwood twitter account. Intramurals Tues/Thurs- Organized Sports- Hockey, Basketball, Football Mon/ Wed/ Fri- Open gym time

6 Clubs at Millwood High School There are MANY clubs and groups that meet at lunch time or after school- something for EVERYONE! This is a great way to meet new people. A club/group information fair is held early in the year. If there is a club/group students are interested in, but it isn’t currently run at MHS- TALK TO YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR or TEACHERS to get a club started!

8 Academic and Personal Supports offered at Millwood High School Academic and Personal Counselling through Guidance Department Personal Counselling through Youth Health Centre African NS and Aboriginal Student Support workers (Damien and Alex/Jessica) Student lunch and learn opportunities (student skills, academic supports, applying for post-secondary, etc.) Resource support for students with Adaptations MHS Library- with computers and various academic resources Peer Tutoring (schedule available in September) Teacher Extra Help (schedule available from individual teachers in September)

9 Semesters and Timetable Semester 1 September - January Semester 2 February – June Currently: 4 day cycle with 4 – 75min Periods 1,2,3,4 Grade 9 students have the same PD and assessment days as the grade 10, 11, and 12 students.

10 English Program: Mandatory Programming: English 9- All year Math 9- All year Phys-ed- All year Science/ Social Studies- One semester per course French 9- One semester every second day Courses with options: Elective Courses- Two electives completed in one semester

11 French Immersion Program Mandatory Programming: French Language Arts- All year* Math 9- All year* Science/ Social Studies- One semester per course* Phys-ed- All year English 9- One semester every second day Courses with options: Elective Courses- Two electives completed in one semester * Indicates course is offered in French

12 Elective Courses Non-Band Student Electives Exploring Music Drama Theatre Visual Arts 9 Tech Ed. 9 Band Student Electives Exploring Music Band Students will receive two elective courses. It is important to note that not all requests are able to be filled because of scheduling conflicts.

13 Grade 9 Course Selection Course selection will take place at Sackville Heights on TUESDAY MARCH 29 th. Course selection is done on the PowerSchool student portal. *Please ensure your child has a working PowerSchool login and password- this can be obtained at Sackville Heights. Course selection will be completed with help from Millwood Guidance Counsellors and Registrar In a few weeks we will send home forms outlining student’s course requests. Please sign and return to SHJH.

14 Course Registration French Immersion and Band are offered at Millwood High School. Students who have been in these programs can choose to continue in them. The form sent home in a few weeks will indicate whether your student is in English or French Immersion and whether or not they are in the band program. If this information is incorrect we ask that you indicate the change on the form before you return it to SHJH.

15 Other Things to Know… First Day of School: Check the MHS website and Twitter for updates and information Students should have a schedule printed from PowerSchool- We will not have copies printed for students. Bring your Student Fees- Amount will be posted on MHS website Bring pens/ pencils and paper. Teachers will let you know if they require specific supplies on first day of school. The first day of school is Tuesday September 6th.

16 Grade 8 Orientation Evening. Grade 8 students are invited to Millwood High School for an orientation evening lead by our student council. The evening will include a tour of the building and an ice cream social. Students should meet in the gym at 6:30 pm on WEDNESDAY MAY 11 th. Parents can pick students up at 7:30 pm
