OPEN SOURCE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS) [PGCSE292] NAME: - INDRANIL RAKSHIT MTECH CSE NETAJI SUBHASH ENGINEERING COLLEGE

DEFINITION  Learning Management System (or LMS) is a broad term used to describe software tools designed to manage user learning interventions and provide access to online learning services for students, teacher, and administrator.  A software system, that allows the development and delivery of educational courses using the Internet as a delivery system.

HISTORY  In the early ’90s some Luther Seminary (St. Paul) faculty members were struggling to retain students who didn’t have the funds or, because of family obligations, couldn’t relocate to attend seminary.  Tom Walker knew there had to be some kind of tool that would enable people to communicate with each other without being in the same place at the same time.  Learning management systems (LMS) also sometimes known as Course management systems (CMS) have come a long way since those early days.

Learning Management Lifecycle A learning management solution provides support in every phase of the learning management life cycle, transforming learning from an event to a continuous process Plan, assemble, & develop courses Define & customize curriculums Personalize through skill assessments Enroll and administer online Provide online course catalogs Automate payments Schedule sessions & logistics Support all delivery forms Web-based Live web conferencing Classroom CD-ROM Track events, completion, skills profiles Certify completion Certify compliance Measure usage Evaluate training Tie to business results and performance measures PlanRegisterDeliverCertify Measure

ROLE OF LMS  Registration and charging  Managing the process  Testing  Mentoring and monitoring  User’s function  Administrator functions

LMS Platforms Open source  ATutor Bazaar  Bodington  DoceboLMS  Dokeos e-Learning XHTML Editor  Fle3  GaneshaLMS  ILIAS  interact  KEWL.Nextgen  LRN  Moodle  OLAT  Mitechsoft Commercial  ANGEL Learning  Apex Learning  Blackboard Inc.  Desire2Learn  eCollege  Learn.com  Meridian KSI  Saba Software  SAP Enterprise Learning

Moodle : a free, Open Source software package, to help educators create effective online learning communities.

Advantages of Open Source LMS (Moodle)  Immediate access to important course information and material.  Additional learning tools, such as forums and quizzes (self tests).  The freedom to access course materials at any time and away from campus.  Total cost of ownership is reduced  Savings can be used for content development  Moodle community is an extremely effective resource  Customize to fit your needs

Disadvantages of Open Source LMS (Moodle)  Lack of easy to obtain support --Forum has a great deal of information but it can be difficult to find –nearly all Forum information is in English  Requires that someone on your staff takes responsibilityfor making it work; you can’t just telephone Moodletechnical support  More instructor effort required; teaching staff may not be able to cope with new technology  Great idea but just too much trouble –no time, no money and little or no support

Open Source LMS (Moodle) - Using Web Technologies  PHP  SQL databases.  XHTML STRICT, CSS.  JavaScript.

Open Source LMS (Moodle) - Using Server Technologies  A Moodle developer should be able to install a local server for testing their code on their operating system of choice. XAMPP is a good choice currently for Windows.  Being able to use the Linux shell can be useful if you need to administer a Moodle server and understanding Apache is useful.

Framework Design Patterns Open Source LMS (Moodle) Framework Design Patterns  MVC  Controller  View  Model  Helpers  Fluent Interface  Class Naming Conventions  Sub-plugins

Architecture of Moodle

Benefits & Drawbacks of Moodle Benefits  It’s open source  great community  customizable  widely available  sell content online  it’s familiar  it has loads of content available Drawbacks:  reporting is difficult  user management  takes a little tech savvy-ness  closed (it’s not open for all users)

Conclusion  In this study, open source LMSs were analyzed and it was observed that Moodle LMS among other LMSs, include many features that improve pedagogical quality and many needed tools that an e-learning system should have.
