3 Background Information Application Letter Writing When writing an application letter, the job seeker had better answer the most important question on the addressee ’ s mind: why is this applicant the best qualified candidate for the job? An effective letter should accomplish three things :

4 First, introduce yourself and your reason for writing in the first part of the letter and try to grab the hiring manager ’ s attention. Second, sell yourself.briefly state your skills that you can bring to the table that will specifically meet the employer ’ s need. Third, close the letter by indicating what you would like to happen next

5 Tips on writing: Whenever possible,address your letter to the individual responsible for filling the position. Be confident but not arrogant with politeness. Be efficient and do not waste your space.

6 New Words and Expression 1. Academic: a. not related to practical situations e.g. He takes an academic interest in politics. Academic freedom helps healthy academic development. 2. Appreciate: v. to be thankful for; enjoy the good qualities of e.g. His abilities were not appreciated in his job. I ’ d appreciate your help if you would turn the radio down.

7 3. Confident: a. feeling a strong belief in one ’ s own abilities e.g. We are confident of victory. We are confident that next year ’ s profits will be much higher. 4. Enclose: v. to surround with a wall to shut in ; to put inside an envelop in addition to something else. e.g. The garden is enclose by a high wall. I enclose a check for $50 with this letter.

8 5. Faithful a. full of loyalty e.g. He is a faithful friend. He is faithful to his principles. 6. Grant: v. to agree to give. e.g. They granted her request. The country was granted its independence in 1961. 7. Nature: n. the qualities that make so different from others. Previous: a. happening before the one mentioned. Respective: a. of or for each one Revise: v. to change because of new information or more thought.

11 11. Sincere: a. without any falseness. e.g. He has a sincere admiration for his opponent ’ s qualities. I don ’ t think she was completely sincere in what she said. 12. Therefore : ad. as a result. e.g. The item you requested is no longer available and therefore we are returning your check. These birds are very rare and therefore we are returning your check.

12 13. Tear up : v. to destroy completely by tearing. e.g. The magician tore up a $50 note and then made it whole again. I believe the government intends to tear up its agreement with the union. 14. Start over : v. to begin again as before or as at the beginning. e.g. The manager was not satisfied with this work and asked him to start it over.

13 Paraphrase some complicated sentences I would like to have your opinion. I guess I should tear up the letter and start over again. Salesman in the Electronic Appliance Section. I am very qualified to meet the requirements.

15 Grammar Focus 五种常用时态小结 1. 一般现在时主要表示: 1) 经常性或习惯性的动作 e.g. We always go to work by bike. 我们总是骑自行车上班。 He works in a factory. 他在一家工厂工作。 2) 普遍真理: e.g.The moon moves around the earth. 月亮围绕地球转。

16 Water dissolves salt. 食盐溶解于水。 3) 表示计划或安排的活动,有表示未来时间的 状语,且常限于少数表示始末或运动的动词, 如 begin, come,go,leave,start, arrive, stop,open,close,depart,be. e.g. The plane takes off at 10 a.m. 飞机上午十点起飞。 We get off at the next stop. 我们下一站下。

17 4) 在时间或条件从句中,用一般现在时表示将来 的行为或状态: e.g. Turn off the light before you leave. 走前关灯。 I will be round to see you if I have time tomorrow. 我明天要是有时间就来看你。 2. 现在进行时主要表示: 1) 现在或现在这一段时间正在进行的动作: e.g. She is showing a foreign guest round the city.
