9 Quick Write Which of the fairytales read for class tonight (or last week) was most familiar to you? Least familiar? What specific elements or parts of the story were familiar? Unfamiliar? Respond to the quote in Tatar (p 102): “Despite the elasticity of Cinderella’s character within any given culture, Jane Yolen may have a point when she asserts that the shrewd, resourceful heroine of folktales from earlier centuries has been supplanted by a “passive princess” waiting for Prince Charming to rescue her. Disney’s Cinderella, as we shall see, is no match for some of her folkloric ancestors, who refuse to stay at home suffering in silence and who become adept at engineering their own rescues.”

16 Archetypal Criticism n literature, an archetype is a typical character, an action or a situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature. An archetype, also known as universal symbol, may be a character, a theme, a symbol or even a setting. Many literary critics are of the opinion that archetypes, which have a common and recurring representation in a particular human culture or entire human race, shape the structure and function of a literary work.theme Carl Jung, Swiss psychologist, argued that the root of an archetype is in the “collective unconscious” of mankind. The phrase “collective unconscious” refers to experiences shared by a race or culture. This includes love, religion, death, birth, life, struggle, survival etc. These experiences exist in the subconscious of every individual and are recreated in literary works or in other forms of art.

17 Feminist criticism Feminist criticism is concerned with "...the ways in which literature (and other cultural productions) reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women" (Tyson).

18 “Who’s the Fairest of them All?” “Snow White” – a German fairy tale but variations are found across Europe First published by The Brothers Grimm in 1812.
