3 Numerous attempts have been made to explain the mechanisms responsible for this interannual variation of the Indian summer monsoon In addition to monthly and seasonal rainfall, extreme climate events, in terms of the frequency, intensity as well as duration assumes profound importance on the local, regional, and national scales, due to the associated critical socioeconomic consequences

4 Analysis on Precipitation Extremes In the present study, several types of precipitation extreme indices determining seasonal frequencies, intensities and spell duration of precipitation are calculated using the Daily Aphrodite rainfall dataset at each grid point of Monsoon Asia for summer monsoon season (1 June to 30 September) of the period from 1951 to 2005 Daily station rainfall data

5 List of indices of precipitation extremes Number of days with rainfall > 10mm Number of days with rainfall > 20mm Number of days with rainfall > 30mm Rainfall due to heavy rainfall event exceeding 95 th percentile Rainfall due to heavy rainfall event exceeding 99 th percentile One-day maximum precipitation Five-day maximum precipitation Continuous wet days when rainfall > 1mm Daily intensity in mm/rainydays

6 List of indices of precipitation extremes In addition these standardized indices, frequencies are calculated for each threshold for 1mm to 100mm and 1 st percentile to 99 th percentile All-INDIA TIME-SERIES constructed by averaging each index
