CIA World Factbook: 5.6% of the world’s population speaks English as their primary (1 st ) language… English = world’s lingua franca (common tongue used for basic communication purposes by people who speak different languages) Superficial, routine communication *Baggage claim vs. getting the contract with a client *Soda or lunch vs. authentic experiences in off-the- beaten-track establishments

3 Top 5 languages spoken in the world 1. Mandarin Chinese (1.1 billion) 2. English (500 – 550 million) 3. Spanish (350 – 420 million) 4. Hindi / Urdu (330 – 450 million) 5. Arabic (200 – 400 million) (includes Primary and as-a-Second-Language)
