5 Reasons for using data mining: To see patterns and trends To identify relationships between two or more pieces of information To analyze consumer spending habits To predict future consumer spending

6 Terms to know Perspective ‐ A particular attitude toward or way of regarding something. Database ‐ A structured set of data held in a computer. Gather ‐ To collect. Information ‐ Facts provided or learned about something or someone. Data ‐ Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.

7 Terms to know Data Gathering Tool ‐ tools used to collect and record information. Analysis ‐ detailed examination of the elements or structure of something. Analytical Tools ‐ tools used to help with analysis. Regression Analysis ‐ procedure for determining a relationship between a dependent variable and an independent variable.

8 Terms to know Query ‐ A request of information from a database. Extract ‐ To get, pull, or draw out, usually with special effort or skill. Transform ‐ To change in form, appearance, or structure. Infrastructure ‐ The basic underlying frame- work or features of a system or organization.
