Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Erosion Explain the 4 ways this landscape is being affected by weathering. Refer to areas of the landscape in your answer.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Learning Outcomes State the different types of weathering Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Learning Benefit: Model the processes that are responsible for rock formation and link these to the rock features.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur What is erosion? Write down the definition for erosion in your books 2 minutes Share your definitions with the person sat next to you 1 minute

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Living along the coast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUh3WeilFN4 1. Why do you think Miss Wrightson bought a house so close to the edge of the cliff? 2.What has caused the cliff to fall into the sea? 3.Is there anything that can be done to stop this happening? 4. What do you think has happened to the bits of rock that have been eroded away?

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Circus Using the information around the room, pick 2 of the following things to do. 1.State the different types of weathering? 2.Explain the process of erosion 3.Describe how erosion, and sedimentary rocks are linked

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Plenary 1.Weathering and erosion are the same thing (T/F) 2.There are 2 types of weathering (T/F) 3.Weathering is the constant wearing down of rocks (T/F) 4.Erosion is the constant wearing down of rocks (T/F) 5.Solution is where soluble rocks dissolve into the river (T/F)

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Biological Plant roots can penetrate into even the toughest rocks over time. This can cause the rock to break apart. Animals walking or scurrying on the rocks can also weather them. Anything living that wears the rock away really.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Chemical Rainwater is naturally acidic (carbon dioxide dissolves in it to give carbonic acid). This can react with limestone, chalk or marble as they are made from calcium carbonate. Sulphur dioxide gas can make rainwater even more acidic – this ‘acid rain’ weathers the rock much faster.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Physical In very hot areas e.g. deserts, it is very hot during the day and very cold at night. This causes the surface of the rock to expand and contract frequently until it eventually breaks off. This is called onion skin weathering (or exfoliation). Onion skin weathering

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Physical Extremes of temperature can cause rocks to break. Freeze- thaw weathering involves water getting into a gap in the rock and then freezing when the temperature drops. Water expands when it freezes and this puts pressure on the rock. The ice melts next day, the now larger gap again fills with water, freezes and so on until the rock breaks. Freeze-thaw weathering

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Hydraulic Action The force of the river against the banks can cause air to be trapped in cracks and crevices. The pressure weakens the banks and gradually wears it away.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Abrasion Rocks carried along by the river wear down the river bed and banks.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Attrition Rocks being carried by the river smash together and break into smaller, smoother and rounder particles.

Explain the processes of erosion Justify peoples decisions for living along the coastline Outcomes State the different types of weathering Key Words Erosion Weathering Transport Learning Objective: Identify the causes of weathering and erosion and describe how they occur Solution Soluble particles are dissolved into the river.
