Topics : What is IBM? Who is WATSON? What is IBM WATSON exactly ?

3 IBM-International Business Machine IBM started in 1911 as a producer of punch card tabulating machine. The first computer the 701 introduced by IBM in 1953. In 60’s and 70’s IBM dominated the new field of mainframe, mini computer. IBM was widely associated with the punched card, the invention of Herman Hollerith

Thomas watson was the chairman and CEO of IBM. In 1914,watson joined company as general manager. Watson developed IBM’s distinctive management style and corporate culture and turned the company into highly-effective selling organization, based largely around PCTM. Who is watson?

Watson is an artificial intelligence computer. IBM Watson capable of answering questions in natural language. Watson can process 500 gigabyte per second. What is IBM WATSON?

IBM Watson can do more than what search engines like Google do. The content was stored in Watson’s RAM.

1) UIMA Key components includes: UIMA-Unstructured Information Management applications UIMA includes: Frameworks,Components, and Infrastructure

2) Java based programming framework The Java Framework supports running both Java and non-Java components (using the C++ framework).Java Framework. The C++ framework, besides supporting annotators written in C/C++, also supports Perl, Python, and TCL annotators.C++ framework Annotator components. These components do the actual work of analyzing the unstructured information. Users can write their own annotators, write their own annotators

3) SUSE Enterprise Linux server SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the fastest operating system on IBM POWER7 The name "S.u.S.E" was originally a German acronym for "Software und System-Entwicklung", meaning "Software and systems development The POWER7 platform is known for its ability to meet high performance, high capacity.

4) 2,880 processor cores The system runs 2,880 cores ( four sockets each, eight cores per socket) to achieve 80 [Tera Flops]. Tera Flops is the unit of measure for supercomputers, representing a trillion floating point operations

5) 500 gigabyte of preprocessed information Watson include encyclopedias, dictionaries, database, novels and other reference materials

The avatar turns blue when Watson is thinking or processing. Various behaviour

The avatar turns green when Watson is confident to give answer.

The avatar turns orange when Watson is confused or gives wrong answer.

HUMANS VS. WATSON DISADVANTAGES 1.Question understanding: Human: Almost instantly knows what is being asked, what is important and how it applies. Watson: Has to find numbers of possibilities to get a hint of the meaning of the question.

2. Processing Speed: Human: Very accurate language processing, accurately grasp questions and can give answer in just a second. Watson: It takes 3-5 seconds to answer.

ADVANTAGES 1.Strategy: Human: slower, less precise. Watson: faster, more accurate calculations. 2. Emotions: Human: yes, can slow down processing. Watson: no, does not get nervous

GOOGLE VS. IBM WATSON How Google understands ?? Google doesn’t try to figure out what words mean. It’s just looking through the billions of pages that it has collected. Then it pulls out the pages that have all the words you searched for. For ex.

How Watson understands?? Watson is trying to understand the meaning behind the sentence. It tries to understand how to correctly read the questions it receives, in order to find answers.

How do they know anything?? Google’s answers come from having gathered billions of web pages. Watson is searching through its own collection of documents.

IBM WANTS TO PUT A WATSON IN YOUR POCKET app for smart phones that uses Watson to answer important questions instantly. Ex. A farmer stands in a field and ask his phone “ when should I plant my corn?” And he would get a reply in second. Computers in future.

EX- A physician use Watson to assist in diagnosing and treating patients. Then the physician pose a query which include symptoms and other related factors. Watson begins to identify the key pieces of information. The system supports medical terminology by design, extending Watson's natural language processing capabilities. How Watson can address healthcare challenges

Watson then find relevant facts about family history, current and other existing conditions. It combines this information with current findings from tests and instruments and then examines it form hypotheses and test them. Watson can incorporate treatment guidelines, electronic medical record data, doctor's and nurse's notes, research, clinical studies, journal articles, and patient information into the data available for analysis. Watson will then provide a list of potential diagnoses along with a score that indicates the level of confidence for each hypothesis.
