Chapter 9-1 What is Energy? Notes! You must use color!

Energy is the capacity to do work.

Kinetic energy The energy of an object that is due to the object’s motion. – When you swing a hammer, you give it kinetic energy, which does the work on the nail.

Kinetic Energy You can find kinetic energy by using this equation: Kinetic energy=mv 2 / 2 M= mass in grams V=speed of object As you can see from the equation, speed has a greater effect on kinetic energy.

Interesting facts One joule is about the amount of energy used to lift an apple 1m. The average serve of a tennis ball is 75J. A single fastball pitch requires 75J. A forward pass in football requires 150J

Potential Energy Potential energy is the energy an object has because of its position. -gravitational potential energy: the potential energy given to an object when a force opposite to the force of gravity is applied to the object. - Gravitational potential energy = weight X height.

Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy is the amount of work an object can do because of the object’s kinetic and potential energies. – Basically, it is the total energy of an object – To calculate: Mech. energy=potential energy + kinetic energy

Work time *Type of energy and its definition. *Explanation of the energy in terms we can understand. *Where we would find the type of energy. *How could we measure the amount of energy? * Any key points from the book that are bolded or italicized. *Interesting facts that pertain to your type of energy.

Key Points for Chapter 9-1 Energy is the ability to do work, and work equals the transfer of energy. Energy and work are expressed in units of joules (J). Kinetic energy is energy of motion and depends on speed and mass. Potential energy is energy of position. Gravitational potential energy depends on weight and height.

Mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy. Thermal energy and sound energy can be considered forms of kinetic energy. Chemical energy, electrical energy, and nuclear energy can be considered forms of potential energy.
