2 When my love swears that she is made of truth I do believe her, though I know she lies, That she might think me some untutor'd youth,, Unlearned in the world's false subtleties. Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young, Although she knows my days are past the best, Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: On both sides thus is simple truth suppress'd. But wherefore says she not she is unjust? And wherefore say not I that I am old? O, love's best habit is in seeming trust, And age in love loves not to have years told: Therefore I lie with her and she with me, And in our faults by lies we flatter'd be

3  General Meaning - - > This poem is about an older man who is speaking about the younger woman he loves.  People may lie for a good reason  They know they are both lying to eachother but they learn to accept it  Loves makes people do crazy things  Poet’s intention: The message of this poem is that the poet candidly reveals both the nature of his relationship with the dark lady and the insecurities he has about growing older.

4  Structure of the poem:  Contrast: In the first line we have a neat contrast between 'swears' and 'truth. She swears to be truth but is lying  When my love swears that she is made of truth And in our faults by lies we flatter'd be" line 14  Lies are not a flattering thing. between 'believe' and 'lies'  "I do believe her though I know she lies" "Simply I credit her false speaking tongue"  You can't credit something that is false

5 Repetitions:  Repetition of the word "Young."  Repetition within the phrase "And age in love loves." The word lie in "Therefore I lie with her and she with me..." - Explanation : That the word lie means that they both sleep with each other and they aren't honest with each other.

6 Sense of the poem:  No Similes!!  Metaphors: she is made of truth the world's false subtleties false speaking tongue habit is in seeming trust

7 Personifications:  "love swears"--personification because love cannot swear  "She is made of truth"--personification because the woman can not physically be made up of truth  "Speaking tongue"--Personification because tongues do not actually speak  "Loves best habit"--Personification because love can not have physically have a habit  "Love loves not to have years told"-- Personification because Love is a feeling and a feeling can not love.
