2 Aim of lesson; Recognise and explain the changes that may affect the body systems as a result of the aging process.

3 Objectives of lesson; Identify the potential physical and psychological changes that may occur due to the aging process. Explain the key features of a body system and a related condition that may develop due to aging process. Produce a fact sheet detailing chosen medical condition including treatment, impact on individual and preventative measures.

5 Debilitating adjective: debilitating

6 In your groups list the 4 body systems;

7 Cardio vascular Respiratory system Skin Nervous system

8 Each group select a body system; In your groups list the potential health issues associated with that body system – You may use ICT to support your research. List these on the whiteboard.

9 Cardiovascular disease (CVD) A general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels. There are four main types of CVD. They are: 1. Coronary heart disease 2. Stroke 3. Peripheral arterial disease 4. Aortic disease

10 Respiratory disease Two categories: 1. Viruses such as influenza, bacterial pneumonia 2. Chronic diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ).

11 Skin The largest body system Skin becomes thinner and weaker during the aging process. This reduces the amount of protection it is able to provide. Conditions include; Skin cancer, wrinkles, bruising, warts, dermatitis, Psoriasis, pressure sores.

12 Nervous system; There are two parts of the nervous system – 1. Central 2. peripheral Problems of the nervous system include; multiple sclerosis ( MS ), Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, shingles and stroke.

14 Each group to research one life system. Create a poster detailing; Function of the system Associated potential health issues Psychological implications Available support Use ICT to support your research

15 Share your fact sheets with the class.

17 To conclude; Write three things learnt in todays lesson on your sheets and put in the sparkly box. Write any areas of development you want clarifying next week before your presentations.
