4.  Became president after William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.  Roosevelt believed that businesses, workers, and consumers should get fair and honest treatment.

5.  Square Deal: focused on regulating big business and protecting workers and consumers.  Roosevelt also believed that he should act in the best interest of the people, since he was president.

6.  What do you think of President Roosevelt?  What do you think about his policies?  Do you think that the government acts this way today? Why or why not?

7.  Taft and Roosevelt were very different people.  Taft wanted to limit power to corporations and add more land to the national forests.

8.  Theodore Roosevelt decided to run as a candidate of a third party against Taft and Woodrow Wilson.  Woodrow Wilson won the election of 1912 because of this.

9.  Wilson put in place the New Freedom.  New Freedom:  Eliminate all trusts  Regulate big business  Clean up political machines.

10.  Pure Food and Drug Act:  Required meat inspections.  Established the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test and approve drugs before they were sold to people.

11.  How did the FDA and the Pure Food and Drug Act change things?  Does the FDA and the Pure Food and Drug Act still affect us today? How so?
