1 Question 1-How do the hero's beliefs affect the choices he makes? Nathanson believed that it was a women’s choice He co founded the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (NARAL) (George) “Believed (Nathanson) legal abortion and it’s public funding would reduce out of wedlock childbearing and poverty." (George) *Belief that abortion is okay= pro-choice view Later he changed his beliefs, thus changing his views * Seeing the fetus through new technology, in the womb, made it undeniable to him that there was a human life. (George) “He could not deny what he was seeing” (Greenberg) “There is no longer any serious doubt in my mind that human life exists within the womb from the very onset of pregnancy”, Nathanson (Greenfield) “He changed his beliefs and his ways-and sides” (Greenfield)- Thus meaning if the hero changes his beliefs it affects his sides, his choices, and his whole life. One major contributing factor was the new EKG and ultra sound imagery technology

2 How did the hero’s childhood affect the choice he made? Nathanson was the son of a Jewish ob/gyn (Greenfield) Due to his fathers choices in decided to become a doctor as well Although it was not his father that made his want to become an abortion doctor. His first involvement with abortion was as a medical student at McGill University in Montreal. (Greenfield) *After creating his own medical practice, he aborted his own child from his impregnated girlfriend. (George)

3 What keeps the hero going when he just wants to give up? Dr. Bernard Nathanson was responsible for about 75,000 abortions (Greenberg) He could bring back the lives he had killed but he could save more to come. The newest EKG and sound imagery (Greenberg) -he would always see the image of the baby from the EKG It had become his life Nathanson made the film silent scream, “is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction” (George)

4 What were some challenges that hero had? Planned Parenthood-believes that each individual to have the right to decide when or whether to have a child. (Planned Parenthood) Organizations like Planned Parenthood wanted to have people plan their life when, Nathanson just wanted to give the babies a chance. *Planned Parenthood has recently experienced a blow because the Koman foundation is no longer funding planned parenthood. (Ines)

5 How do we define the personality traits of a hero? Cultural members with correct or “perfect” behavior. (Elements of Culture) Classic Heroes are often a founder of an organization. (Elements of Culture) Nathanson produced a documentary film, “The Silent Scream” (George)

6 How does the hero reflect his society? He previously represented the pro choice side of our society-Before 1974 (Greenberg) In 1980 Nathanson became a pro life activist, representing the other side of his culture. (George) There are two sides the culture on the topic of abortion. –Pro Choice or Pro Life

7 How did Roe vs. Wade affect the hero? Roe v. Wade- The Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. (Fried) Roe v. Wade was the point where the hero opened his eyes…it changed his belief. (Greenberg) “There is not longer any serious doubt in my mind that human life exists within the womb from the very onset of pregnancy”- Nathanson (Greenberg) Roe v. Wade made the split in the culture which was already there, so much larger.

8 How was the hero supported during his journey? The president Ronald Regan was a big supporter for Nathanson. Ronald Regan showed the film, The Silent Scream, in the White House and touted it in speeches. (George) Ronald Regan was in opposition to abortion and gay rights. (Fried)

9 How does the society view Nathanson? To some he is the good guy, the hero, “the doctor who saw what he did” (Greenberg) He fought a “war” that opened many eyes. Although other parts of the society view him as a bad man. These are ones who will fight against him, for example Bill Clinton was pro choice. (Fried)

10 Does the hero ever give up? Why is that important? Bernard Nathanson fought for the right to life until his death…(George) He never gave up and always tried to get information out to the public. He created the “silent scream” (Greenberg)
